For those of you who don't know, I took August off to travel to North Queensland to run a 3 day Photography Retreat, then spent a week in Brisbane for some family time. We photographers are very good at convincing ourselves that the next camera or lens is where our money should go. But honestly, some of my most useful purchases have had nothing to do with taking the final photograph.

I’ve just posted a new blog sharing five things I believe are genuinely worth spending money on as a photographer, from saving your neck on long photo walks to making content creation and those marathon editing sessions far more enjoyable.

Some are practical, some are a little unexpected, but they’re all things that support the way I actually work.

So, I opened Photoshop after the latest update, went to make a quick Brightness and Contrast adjustment and thought…

Hang on. Where did it go?

If you’ve recently updated Photoshop and you’re wondering where some of those familiar adjustment sliders have disappeared to, you’re definitely not alone.
Adobe has made a few changes to the way the Adjustments panel works, and while Brightness and Contrast haven’t actually disappeared, they may not be sitting where you expect to find them anymore.

So in this quick video, I’m going to show you where Brightness and Contrast have gone, how to find them, and what’s changed with the latest Photoshop update.

Because apparently learning Photoshop also means occasionally playing a game of “Where did Adobe move that?”

✨ LIGHT PAINTING IS BACK! ✨

After such a fabulous response to my August Light Painting workshops, I'm running another Light Painting with Still Life Workshop on Sunday 27th September at my Narre Warren studio.

If you've been curious about light painting but thought it looked a little too complicated, I promise it's much easier than you think!

We'll turn down the lights, slow everything down and explore how you can use a simple torch and long exposures to create beautiful, dramatic still life images full of mood, texture and atmosphere.

You'll learn how to:

📷 Set up your camera for light painting
🔦 Control where and how the light falls
✨ Build up highlights and shadows
🎨 Create depth, mood and a painterly feel
📸 Work through a variety of styled still life setups

It's relaxed, hands-on and very much about experimenting. I'll guide you through the process, then give you plenty of time to play and discover what happens when you start putting the light exactly where you want it.

And once you know how to do it, it's something you can easily continue experimenting with at home.

I realised that while I share plenty of photographs, behind-the-scenes moments, workshops and creative experiments, I don’t often stop and introduce the person behind the camera.

So, hello! I’m Julie, a photographer, educator, writer and enthusiastic collector of interesting props, beautiful light and creative ideas.

Photography has been part of my life for many years, and I’m still just as curious about it now as when I began. I love creating cinematic portraits, playful studio concepts, food photography and quiet still-life stories. More than anything, I love helping other photographers build confidence, understand light and discover their own creative voice.
