🚀✨ BABS IN SPACE ✨🚀

"Babs in Space" has officially landed.

And yes, it was heavily inspired by those wonderfully campy 60s sci-fi adventures.

I mean... IYKYK. 😆

This is actually something I've wanted to photograph for years. I'm such a geek. There is just something about that retro-futuristic style, the silver boots, ray guns, big hair, and the wonderfully optimistic idea of what people thought the future might look like.

Sandra absolutely owned this role. From the moment she stepped onto set she brought exactly the right mix of glamour, confidence and attitude to our intergalactic heroine.

And can we take a moment for that fabulous hair? Rose Thorogood absolutely nailed the look, while Jolie Nguyen worked her magic with the makeup to bring the whole concept together.

Sometimes photography doesn't have to be serious. Sometimes it's about embracing a fun idea that's been rattling around in your head for years and finally bringing it to life.

So tell me... do you love those old-school sci-fi movies and TV shows, or is this genre completely before your time? 😉🚀✨

You do not need a massive studio, endless props or the latest camera gear to create beautiful photographs.

Honestly, some of my favourite images have been created with:
• window light
• black fabric
• Some cloth
• a simple idea
• one small light

That’s it.

I think sometimes we forget creativity has very little to do with how much gear we own, and far more to do with how we see light, mood and story.

So I wrote a new blog post about creating beautiful work from small spaces and simple setups, especially when you feel creatively stuck or overwhelmed.

“You Don’t Need a Studio to Create Something Beautiful”

Read it here:

Maybe the answer isn’t buying more gear.
Maybe it’s simply creating with what’s already around you.

These images are from way back when with the incredible JessAmi and Em Mrietta for makeup. Oh how I do miss working with these two.

Funny thing about creative photography…

Sometimes the final image looks wildly complicated, cinematic and expensive.

Meanwhile behind the scenes it’s:
LED tubes balanced on chairs,
silver foil taped to walls,
someone holding smoke in the wrong direction,
and me wandering around muttering “wait wait wait… this might actually work.”

And honestly?
That’s half the fun.

Creative photography doesn’t need a giant studio or endless gear.
Sometimes it just needs experimentation, curiosity and the willingness to try something ridiculous.

The Crystal Blue concept shoot was exactly that.

A little chaos.
A lot of LEDs.
And somehow pure magic by the end of it. Thanks to my amazing team on this one and .makeup.artistry

I seriously cant wait to take this one to a whole new level.

Well… there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say out loud.
“I’ve never set someone on fire before.” 🔥😂

Before anyone panics, Skye survived the experience perfectly fine and no one was harmed in the making of these images. Just a lot of planning, safety precautions, controlled fire effects, and a healthy amount of “OK… I hope this works.”

This shoot was one of those creative ideas that sat in the back of Skye's brain for ages. Dark, moody, cinematic, a little dangerous looking, and honestly, ridiculously fun to create. The glow from the flames gave everything this raw, primal feel that I absolutely love.

Massive thanks to Skye for trusting me to capture these stunning images, while I casually said things like, “Hold still… while your leg is on fire.” Totally normal photographer behaviour. 😅

Sometimes the best images come from pushing outside the comfort zone and trying the crazy idea. Will you be seeing more like this, HELL YEAH! Already planning the next shoot.

🎪 Step Behind the Curtain... 🎪

Over the past week you've met Luna the Acrobat and Roberto the Magician.

Now it's your turn to photograph them.

On Sunday July 5th, I'll be hosting a small-group creative portrait workshop at Slowburn Studio in Frankston, where we'll be creating cinematic character portraits inspired by vintage circuses, travelling performers and theatrical storytelling.

Together we'll explore:

✨ Cinematic lighting techniques
✨ Storytelling through portraiture
✨ Working with colour, mood and atmosphere
✨ Directing expressive performers
✨ Creating images that feel like scenes from a movie

Featuring:

🎭 Emily Reinhard as Luna the Acrobat
🎩 Kimberley Fabian as Roberto the Magician
💄 Makeup artistry by Jolie .makeup.artistry

This isn't about photographing models standing in front of a backdrop.

It's about creating characters, stories and images that make people stop scrolling.

If you've been looking to add something unique to your portfolio or simply want a fun afternoon shooting with a fantastic creative team, I'd love to have you join us.
