Smiles come easily when you've got your twin to crack you up.

These two didn't need much encouragement!

I like to chat, laugh and let kids play (even when taking more posed shots).

When we play, explore, and muck around a bit the most natural smiles and laughter happens without even trying.

I've been lucky enough to capture this family over the years.

First time, their eldest was exploring, sticks in hand, curious and on the move. Second time, there was a brand new baby and a big brother working out what to do with him.

Now they're playing and laughing together.

Photographing the same family over a few years does something to you. You notice all the little shifts you'd otherwise miss.

Warmer months always book out quicker than people expect, so if spring or summer photos are on your mind, it's worth having a think about it now.

Kids who need a bit of a warm up, kids who'd rather climb things than stand still, kids who have absolutely no interest in looking at the camera.

We play, explore and have fun and with a little gentle guidance the photos happen naturally. They won't even realise that's what we were doing.

As a mum of two, I've had a bit of practice. 😉

The most common thing I hear from couples who had a small wedding without a photographer is that the day went so fast they barely remember it.
Everyone is present, everyone is emotional and nobody is actually capturing what's happening.

That's the bit worth having someone there for. So you can look back and remember all of it.

I honestly didn't expect to love winter photos as much as I did.

That's what one of the families I photographed recently said afterwards. It's a pretty common reaction. The light is softer, everyone's a bit more snuggly and somehow it all just comes together.

Winter mini sessions at Footscray Town Hall are open to all kinds of families.

Couples, families with children, maternity, or somewhere in between. A toddler and a bump, little ones who've never had proper photos, a new baby joining the crew. If you've got people you want photos with, that's enough.

The photos people tend to love most aren't the ones where everyone is looking at the camera.

They're the ones where someone is mid-laugh, or a kid is doing something completely their own thing, or mum is just looking at them. Those are the ones that end up on the wall.

Getting the whole family in a photo together doesn't happen that often. Someone's always behind the camera, or the timing's never quite right, or it just keeps getting pushed to later.

Winter mini sessions are a pretty low-key way to actually do it. Fifteen minutes, everyone rugged up, somewhere beautiful.

Registry weddings are their own kind of special.

The bride's floral dress stole the show, the flower girls carried Labubus instead of posies and the guest list was all of their favourite people.

A perfect day that was completely, entirely them.

Most of my sessions are along the bay and in the gardens of Melbourne's inner west. Which I love. But this winter I'm doing something a bit different.
Footscray Town Hall has beautiful old grounds and architecture that make for a pretty stunning backdrop. Somewhere new, somewhere a bit unexpected, and a really lovely place for families to explore together.
