This was a technically a ‘newborn session’… but baby’s older brother absolutely stole a few moments of the spotlight.

Little Artie was everything you could hope for as a photographer - calm, content and those perfect tiny newborn details I could photograph all day long.

And then his big brother Ziggy stepped in full of personality (like he always does). He was completely switched on from the moment the camera came out. He just gave us EVERYTHING, in a way that makes everyone in the room just smile and laugh.

This is our fourth session together, and Mama said the same thing she usually does; “He loves coming here” and “You always get the best out of him”.

I never get tired of hearing it.

It’s one of my favourite things about this job - seeing kids surprise everyone like that in the best way possible, especially in the middle of something so important for the family.

Baby brother was the star of the day obviously… but big brother definitely had his own little moment too…. and here’s the proof 🥰

At a viewing appointment in the studio today, I was sharing the most beautiful gallery with a family I first photographed when their eldest was brand new.

Now they’re a family of four, with a gallery full of heartfelt moments, toddler chaos and beautiful smiles. But Mum kept coming back to this one photograph of herself holding her nine-day-old baby girl against her chest.

She loved it.

But she kept saying, “You can’t see her face.”

And she was right. You couldn’t.

But we know who that baby is.

We don’t need to see her face to remember the weight of her in Mum’s arms. The smell of her. How tiny and new she was. The feeling of finally holding this little person against her chest.

So I asked Mum what it was about the photograph that kept pulling her back.

And once we talked about what she loved about it, she realised it wasn’t really about what she could see.

It was about what she could feel.

And suddenly, it became one of the photographs she couldn’t leave behind. 🤍

An unsettled baby, a toddler who wants to do anything but be in a photo, or a family who arrive telling me they feel awkward in front of the camera? None of it rattles me.

After more than 15 years of photographing families, I’ve seen just about every version of a session.

Babies who don’t sleep.
Toddlers who refuse to sit still.
Kids who need time to warm up.
And plenty of adults who are convinced they’re awkward, unphotogenic or have no idea what to do with themselves.

But you never need to apologise to me.

Your children don’t need to perform for the camera, and you don’t need to know how to pose or suddenly feel completely comfortable having your photograph taken.

Experience has taught me how to slow things down, give you enough direction without making everything feel staged, and work with the family in front of me.

Because I’m not trying to capture a polished version of your family.

I’m there to capture you as you are.

The personalities, the connection, the chaos and all the little things that make your family yours.

If you've found your way here recently, here's what I hope you know about me.

I’m not here to create the kind of family photos where everyone stands in a perfectly straight line, smiles at the camera and says cheese.

I'm here to create the ones that stop you in your tracks and give you all the warm and fuzzies. The ones you’ll look back on six months, six years or even sixty years from now and think...

*I remember that.*

The way your toddler wrapped their arms around your leg.
The cheeky grin they gave when no one else was looking.
The way your baby fit perfectly in your hands.
The laugh your partner gives that only your family gets to hear.

Those are the moments I'm chasing.

The beautiful photos are just the bonus.

So if you're looking for a photographer who'll happily embrace the chaos, make your kids feel like they're just playing, and help you walk away with photographs that actually *feel* like your family...

I think you'll fit in just fine here. 🤍

Can we normalise posting just one photo to the grid again? 😂

Even as a photographer (who has so many gorgeous sessions waiting to be shared), I sometimes put off posting because I think I need to pull together 10 perfect images, the perfect caption and the perfect timing.

Meanwhile, I’m also a mum trying to survive the endless snack requests, the laundry pile, answer emails, edit galleries, remember what’s for dinner and wrestle a toddler who thinks sleep is optional.

So today, you’re getting one photo.

Because one is better than none… right?

Tell me you get it. 😂

Mum arrived at her viewing appointment and before I’d even started the slideshow she said:

“I really want to love them… but I just know how everything went on the day.”

And honestly? That was fair enough…

On the day of our session she said her toddler wasn’t himself. The energy felt kind’ve off. Nothing was really going to plan.

So from her perspective, it probably felt like a bit of a disaster.

Meanwhile, I was standing there thinking, “This is actually going really well, especially if he’s not feeling his normal self today”.

And like so many parents do, she left wondering if we’d managed to get anything at all… These are the images from that session 😍

So here’s a gentle reminder that what you think is happening and what I see through my lens are often two very different things.

Because after 15 years photographing families in Melbourne’s west, I can tell you this:

The sessions that might *feel* like they’re falling apart are very rarely falling apart.

While you’re worrying about smiles, I’m watching for connection.
While you’re seeing chaos, I’m seeing moments.
While you’re doubting it’s working, I’m already building a gallery you’re about to fall in love with.

My sessions are relaxed, guided, and led by your child on the day - not a rigid idea of how it “should” go.

Beautiful photos don’t come from perfect behaviour or perfectly timed smiles.

I know when to jump in and help.
I know when to back off and let things breathe.
I know how to find connection in whatever version of the day shows up.

So if you’ve ever left a session thinking, “I don’t think we got much…”

There’s a very good chance I’ve already got exactly what you didn’t realise you were hoping for.

Swipe to see the gallery Mum almost talked herself out of loving 🥰

I honestly think family photos become more valuable the further away you get from the day they were taken.

Right now, you might notice the double chin. The money you spent. The child who refused to stand still. Or the ten minutes where absolutely nobody listened to a word anyone said.

But give it 20 years.

You’ll notice how little they were. How they fit into your arms. How your family looked before everything changed again.

And I have a feeling the things you worried about on the day won’t even get a look in.

You park the car and, for a second, wonder… did I actually choose the right time for this?

There’s a lot you’re carrying into that moment. Bags, snacks, a tired baby, a toddler with opinions, and that little voice in your head running through the full checklist:

Will they behave?
What if someone cries the whole time?
What if I feel awkward?
What if nobody smiles?
What if we don’t get anything I actually love?

And then you walk in.

It’s calm. Everything you need is there. The energy in the room feels different.

There’s no pressure to perform, no expectation for the kids to act a certain way and no need for everything to go perfectly for us to create something beautiful.

We just start where you are. Wherever that is.

Usually, that’s a little nervous.

But a few minutes in, something shifts.

Your shoulders drop.
You stop watching the clock.
You stop trying to force things or fix every little moment.
And your kids realise they don’t need to be anything other than themselves.

And what comes through is your family, exactly as you are right now.

The cuddles. The chaos. The little looks between you. The parts you don’t always get to see when you’re busy being the one holding everything together.

By the time you leave, it doesn’t feel like something you had to “get through.”

It feels lighter than that.

Even just for a little while, you got to simply be in it too - instead of always being the one managing it all.

So, if you’ve been wondering whether a session might be too much for you, your family or your nervous system, I promise that hesitation is completely normal.

And I promise you don’t need perfectly behaved children. You don’t need to have it all together. And your family definitely doesn’t need to know exactly what to do in front of a camera.

You just need to show up as you are.

I’ll take care of the rest.

JUNE 🤍

A little late, but that feels about right.

Some days I was photographing families and sharing the beautiful memories we captured. Some days I was reshuffling sessions altogether thanks to Melbourne weather and winter germs. Some days I was deep in website updates wondering if I’d accidentally confused the heck out of Google.

June was a mixed bag.

A sad goodbye, a few little wins, a lot of behind-the-scenes work, and plenty of time in the garden looking for birdies.

And yes, we’re absolutely doing the Hokey Pokey as I’m posting this.
