i used to spend weekends doing the kind of “extra” that never felt like extra.

flying home on a saturday
flying out on a sunday
writing project applications from home when the 9-5 time ran out
gg
maximising the working week
… while slowly minimising myself

and I hated it

this morning I got up on a saturday for a client shoot
—and the ease surprised me

not because it was effortless
because it was aligned

that’s the part people don’t say out loud:

when you do something you love,
the hard parts don’t vanish

… but they stop feeling like punishment

if you’re in midlife and you’re asking yourself

*“Is this it?”

— please hear me:
you’re allowed to want a life
that feels lighter on a monday
and on a saturday

what’s one thing you’d gladly get up for
—even on a weekend?

i’ll go first … can you guess?
photography of course ♥️

sometimes becoming looks nothing like we imagined

it isn’t one dramatic leap

it’s a hundred small decisions

to keep going
to begin again
to trust yourself
to carry a camera

for me, photography became part of a journey
from ugly duckling to swan

not because i changed who i was

but because i finally started seeing my own strengths

this is part two of our friday focus collaboration

22 photographers, one musician and countless interpretations of what it means to become

every photograph here tells a story
of transformation, growth or possibility

what are you becoming?

not who you were

not who other people expected you to be

but who you are becoming

this month’s friday focus challenged 22 photographers to explore a simple but powerful theme

becoming

when i started photography in midlife, i felt like the ugly duckling in the story

unsure, out of place, convinced everyone else knew what they were doing

but becoming isn’t about turning into someone else

it’s about growing into who you were always meant to be

through photography, we captured growth, change, courage, reinvention and the moments in between

this is part one of our collaboration, accompanied by original music from one of our community members

which photo speaks most to your own journey of becoming?

I worked so much overtime
while she was growing up

i regret it but i can’t get those hours back

i can make sure i don’t miss any more though

reinventing yourself in midlife isn’t just about you
it’s about who gets more of you afterwards

my daughter gets the version of me
that’s home for breakfast

that swims with her in the early morning

that’s around for lunch
because I work from the kitchen table

that bunks off on a thursday
to get bagels and buy jorts with her

I didn’t become a photographer
and go self employed to escape something

I did it to get back to something

regrets are real

but they don’t have to be the end of the story

they can be the reason you finally change it

what did you decide to stop missing?

ten photographs I consider almost perfect

not technically

but in the way that matters more than that

the moment was right
the light was right
something in me was paying attention

swipe through

these are from portraits, macro, nature and landscape
different places, different subjects, different days

all of them made by a woman who picked up a camera again at fifty

and is still learning what she’s looking at

tell me which one makes you stop

because the one that stops you
is probably trying to tell you something

even when i’m guest at a party

i’m still carrying my camera
and still taking photographs

I don’t plan it that way
— it just happens

i’m happier carrying my camera everywhere
and i love what i do

a rocky horror party,
midlife celebration,
fabulous costumes,
zero inhibitions

and a room full of people who had completely forgotten there was a camera in it

which is exactly when the real photographs happen

not when people pose
not when they’re ready

when they’re mid time warp
laughing so hard they can’t stand up straight
and completely, entirely themselves ♥️

this is what I do

I disappear into a room
until people forget I’m there

and then I catch them being exactly who they are

no direction
no asking anyone to smile
no artificial light or carefully arranged moments

just people
really living

nobody tells you this part

starting down the path to midlife reinvention isn’t what changes your life

what changes your life
is showing up for yourself
day after day

no matter how afraid you are
no matter how tempting the safe option feels
no matter how uncertain the future seems

change starts today

when i picked up a camera at 50, i didn’t suddenly become confident

i didn’t suddenly know what i was doing
i didn’t suddenly stop doubting myself
i was still scared
i still got things wrong
i still wondered if i was wasting my time

the difference was that i kept going

and somewhere between the mistakes,
the uncertainty and the learning,
i built a life that feels more like mine

one that feels fulfilling, authentic
and brimming over with confidence ♥️

if you’re waiting until you feel ready, confident or qualified to make midlife changes you might be waiting forever

sometimes the only way forward
is to begin before you’re ready

today

are you with me?

nobody talks about how many dreams get postponed

not abandoned
just postponed

until the children are older
until work calms down
until life gets easier
until there’s more time

and then one day you realise
you’ve been waiting for permission
that was never coming

what dream have you been postponing?

midlifers, this is your sign
— start realising those postponed dreams today

people have always told me i look young for my age

but lately the comments have changed

“you look younger than you did two years ago”
“you look happier”
“the stress has gone from your face”

and they’re right
two years ago i was burned out

today i’m a professional photographer

the difference wasn’t a cream, a treatment or a miracle 🙃

it was giving myself permission to start again

at 50, i picked up a camera
at 52, i’m building a business around something i genuinely love

turns out that when you stop living the life
you think you should be living

and start making space for the life
you actually want, something changes

not just in your calendar

but in your face
your energy
your confidence
your whole way of moving through the world

sometimes the most powerful anti-ageing treatment is giving yourself permission to begin

know someone who needs to hear this today?
send to a friend who’s stuck ♥️

5 reasons i’m not putting my camera down anytime soon

it’s not just about becoming a photographer
— or even being a photographer over fifty

it’s about how i move through my life now

anything else is unthinkable
