For nearly forty years, veterinary fences closed the zebra migration route between the Okavango Delta and Nxai Pan in Botswana. When they came down, the zebra walked the exact path their ancestors had, as though they had never forgotten.

That is the story behind The Great Remembering, our new collection showing at the V&A Waterfront from 10 November.

We’re nearly ready to share the next three photographs from The Great Remembering.

These are the next of the 135,000 frames I took following the zebra migration between the Okavango Delta and Nxai Pan that we are bringing off the screen and onto paper. It is a slow, careful stage, and one I have learnt not to rush.

For nearly forty years, veterinary fences kept this route closed. When they came down, the zebra walked it again as though they had never forgotten. That memory is what this collection holds.

We hope to show them for the first time at our pop-up exhibition on 10 November.

From printing to framing, every Rabinowitz photograph is a labour of love. Each step is handled with care, patience and an attention to detail that goes far beyond what you see in the finished piece.

Because the art deserves just as much thought in its making as it did in its capturing.

The Story Behind: The Oasis.

In the white, sun-bleached basin of Etosha National Park, Namibia, there is a small stand of palm trees that has no business being there. I had driven past it many times. Then one morning a lone giraffe walked slowly out of the heat and into their shade, and for a few quiet minutes the whole pan felt like something out of a dream.

Giraffe and palm, together in a place defined by drought and extremes. Neither should thrive here, and yet both do. That is what stays with me about this photograph. It was never only about an improbable pairing. It is about life holding on, gently and without fuss, where the land gives almost nothing back.

The Oasis now joins the Desert Wanderers Collection, released as a limited edition of 180. A number drawn from chai, the Hebrew word for life, which felt right for this one.

Meet Seshen! He keeps our printing room running, and ensures the highest quality of each photograph.

When an edition is capped at 180, every photograph within it has to be worthy of its number. Seshen is the one who makes sure of it: the last pair of eyes on each artwork before it leaves the studio for a collector’s home, wherever in the world that may be.

And nothing that falls short goes to waste. It becomes part of the packaging that carries the others safely on their way.

A portrait of partnership.

We asked Adam which of his photograph’s remind him most of Brigid. Although a tough choice - he chose ‘Us Against the Tide’, from the Bazaruto Collection. It captures two figures drifting together across the water off the Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique, with nothing to disturb them and no one to interrupt.

This year marked a milestone for us: a permanent home for the work at Moorings. No longer a stop along the way, but a place the photographs can settle into and stay. A room built for slowing down, for hearing how each image came to be, and for meeting the animals and places that shaped it.

Day 2 Botswana recap! A brief intermission of meerkats on this morning. A whole family of them, right at home in their own patch of the Kalahari, completely unbothered by the audience 😉. Then, back to camp in the afternoon to recharge batteries and gear.

As afternoon arrived we were back up in the sky, and got incredibly lucky witnessing the zebras migrating across the salt pans - in light you just can’t plan for. This is the migration behind my latest release - ‘The Great Remembering’.
