Shipwrecks on Lake Michigan

06/02/2026

Crescent City was a booming, short-lived lumber town on the western shore of North Manitou Island. Today, it is a ghost town. The original 600-foot Crescent Dock, built in 1907 for the Smith & Hull Lumber Co., was eventually destroyed by storms. Only a few wooden foundation pilings remain visible in the shallow water.

It was a nice day out on Lake Michigan yesterday at South Manitou Island.
