My name is Hiroto Hayashi, it's nice to meet you! In an effort to delve into the natural world, I write and take photos of the things I experience and the people that I meet. I believe that the key to inspiring people to try any outdoor pursuit or nature-based skill is to provide them with experience. That experience can be explicit--by teaching someone to fish for the first time--or vicarious--by

writing stories and taking pictures that entertain, educate, and inspire. The goal of the work that I do is to make a lasting impression on someone. Hopefully, the experience becomes a part of their personal story; the reasons why they climb mountains, fish in their waters, or cook food that came straight from the source. The thing about outdoor and nature-based activities is the fact that they tie in together like roots below a tree. A professor of mine once said, "Dabbling in a little of everything will result in a multiplication of applicability in other areas of your life." Every activity whether it's fishing, hunting, baking, or making soaps and oils provides a different suite of experiences and skills. By dabbling, we become a jack-of-all-trades in the most holistically engaging activities the world has to offer.

You never know what you'll catch while fishing big rivers! This was my first trip out with a baitfeeder reel and sheesh... that screaming clicker is addicting.

A baitfeeder reel has a button that activates what functions as a secondary, lighter drag. When a fish takes the bait and runs, the spool spins relatively freely resulting in a loud clicking noise. In this case, the fish grabbed the bait and ran wild with it!

The backyard mayfly hatch is popping off. I have no idea why my house is so covered in them. We are quite a ways from the river, and every morning I wake up to the walls covered in mayflies of various sizes. My best guess is that they tuck into the dense surrounding leaf litter or somehow survive in the tiny intermittent creek nearby.
