They turned their own backyard into a fairytale. 🤍

And somehow, even with rain, this wedding was absolutely magical.

Congratulations to Victoria & Nick!! 🥂

This one was extra special to photograph because this entire wedding happened at the family home. The bride’s mom transformed their property into the most beautiful wedding setting. Her room became the bridal suite, the yard became the ceremony and reception space, the pond became one of the most beautiful backdrops, and the florals… I don’t even have words. INSANE.

And then there was this bride. 😍 She looked like an absolute princess.

The rain was off and on, but honestly, I think it added something to the story. The umbrellas, the misty trees, the rain on the pond, the flowers everywhere, the cozy house, the little candid moments with family… it all felt so incredibly personal.

There were so many little moments throughout this day that I loved getting to capture. From getting ready in the most beautiful room, to the flowers spilling over the piano, to dancing under the trees, to the couple down by the pond.

It wasn’t perfect. It was better than perfect. It was theirs.

I don’t think people always realize what a big deal it is to be invited into someone’s most important moments. You’re being trusted with the parts of their lives that are intimate, emotional, vulnerable, exciting, and completely irreplaceable. And when someone chooses you to document those moments again and again, it means more than I could ever really put into words.

I first photographed these two for their engagement session. Then I got to photograph their wedding, their maternity photos, and now I’ve had the absolute honor of photographing their sweet baby’s first hours earthside.

They welcomed their baby at Birthing Miracles in Beaver Dam, WI with an amazing midwife and in the most calm, natural and beautiful way. And later that same day, I got to come and photograph them settling into life as a family of three.

Being chosen over and over again to document these moments is something I will never take for granted.

Getting to watch a couple go from engaged, to married, to expecting, to holding their baby in their arms is pretty dang special.

Adalie & David 🤍

There are some weddings where the little things tell you everything about the people getting married, and this was one of them.

Their day at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie was filled with faith, family, Korean traditions, travel memories, and so much thoughtfulness. From Adalie’s mom and sister wearing their beautiful pastel hanboks, to the railroad map and passport holder she gifted David, to their relationship timeline and all the little details tucked throughout the day.

But what I loved most was how intentional they were about their people. They made time to actually connect with their guests, from family photos after the ceremony to walking around the reception serving cake table by table.

And then there were the unexpected parts of the story. I wasn’t originally supposed to be their photographer, but an unexpected last-minute change brought me into their day through a Sun Prairie community group. Their friend Joyce also stepped in to coordinate the wedding after the rehearsal, and somehow made the entire day run absolutely flawlessly.

It feels pretty fitting that a couple who found each other unexpectedly would have a wedding day filled with people showing up for them exactly when they needed it.

There is such a tiny window of time between little girl and teenage girl.

I think 11 is right in the middle of it.

They’re finishing elementary school and heading into middle school. They still climb trees and laugh until they can’t breathe. They’re silly and loud and completely themselves with their best friends. They hold hands, make up games, eat apples in the sunshine and don’t quite realize yet how quickly all of this is going to change.

But when I look at them, I can already see glimpses of the young women they’re becoming.

And maybe that’s why this season of motherhood feels so incredibly tender to me.

These are my daughter’s best friends. I’ve watched them grow up together, and I realized recently that we take pictures of so many milestones, but we don’t always think to photograph girlhood itself.

Not a birthday. Not graduation. Not because someone accomplished something.

Just because they are eleven.

Because these friendships matter. Because the way they laugh together right now matters. Because their freckles and tangled hair and inside jokes and scraped knees and absolute ridiculousness deserve to be remembered too.

Someday they’ll look back at these photographs and see the little girls they used to be.

And someday, much sooner than I’d like, I will too.

So I think I want to start offering more sessions like this.

Bring me your daughters. Bring me the best friends who are practically sisters. Let them run, climb trees, eat snacks, whisper secrets, laugh too loudly and just be girls.

No milestone required.

Just a little piece of their girlhood, kept forever. 🤍

Wisconsin State Capitol engagement sessions always look beautiful.

What people don’t see is everything happening outside the frame.

Tour groups. Families. Farmers’ Market crowds. Strangers walking through almost every photo.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, Rebecca quietly looked at me and said,

“I feel like I look awkward. Like something isn’t right.”

The funny thing is, I wasn’t seeing awkwardness at all.

I was watching exactly what happens with almost every couple during the first few minutes in front of the camera. They think about where their hands are. They wonder if they’re smiling right. They worry they’re doing it wrong.

Then something changes.

The poses stop mattering.

The camera fades into the background.

And two people start paying attention to each other instead.

That’s exactly what happened during Spencer and Rebecca’s session.

By the end of the afternoon, they had somehow made one of the busiest places in Madison feel like it belonged only to them. Somewhere between the Capitol hallways, the rooftop, the spiral staircase, one stubborn elevator, and a few trips through the revolving doors, they forgot they were having engagement photos taken.

Those always end up being my favorite photographs.
