Somewhere between two worlds, I found my voice. 🤍
Growing up as a first-generation immigrant in America, I’ve often felt like I exist in a space in between. To some, I’m too Asian. To others, I’m too Americanized. It can be difficult to figure out where you belong when you feel like you’re never quite enough of either.
For a long time, I struggled to make sense of that feeling. But somewhere along my journey, I found photography. 📸
Through my lens, I’ve learned that identity doesn’t have to fit into one box. We can carry different cultures, histories, and influences with us and still create something that feels entirely our own.
Perhaps that’s why I feel so connected when photographing in places like Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau, and Vietnam. These places carry layers of history, including colonial influences, yet their identities are so much more than that. You see cultures blending together in the food, architecture, art, fashion, and everyday life. The old and the new exist side by side, each shaping the other without completely losing themselves.
There’s something deeply comforting about witnessing that duality. It reminds me that being between two cultures doesn’t mean you’re lost. Sometimes, it means you have the ability to see beauty in both worlds.
And through photography, I’ve finally found a way to express that part of myself to tell stories, preserve culture, and celebrate the beauty of belonging to more than one place.
Maybe home isn’t always a single place. Maybe it’s the feeling of being understood. ❤️
