When you read a story, you picture a scene. When you view a photograph, you imagine the story. In both instances, light brings color and mood and shapes the scene.
Simply having light makes you no more able to tell a story than having a pen. You have to know how to use it to create with it.

You are absolutely one of a kind. And you are also part of a bigger story. Just as you see your connection with your parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. through photographs there will come a day when younger generations will look for photographs of you. They will see who you were at that particular age and see a little bit of themselves at the same time.
You might think that this photo session is a nice thing to do for yourself or your parents. But really, this is ALSO a gift to so many people who will come after you--even if you never meet them in person.

You’ve seen the senior photos before yours and you think to yourself, “I want that!”
But what is it that you want? Maybe you love the background, the light, her clothes, or her hair. But what you really want is that FEELING. You want the emotion, the confidence, maybe the drama or the lightheartedness. You see those images that make you gasp and THAT’s what you’re really after.
How do you get it? It doesn’t come from copying something you’ve seen a million times before. It comes from identifying what makes you the one-and-only you and amplifying THAT.

Choosing color isn't just about knowing your favorite color. Colors naturally convey meaning and emotion. When designing your session, I take into account the message(s) you want to convey and, among other design elements, how color can contribute to that.
Your favorite color is likely found on repeat in your wardrobe, photographs, home decor, and brand. How does it make you feel?

Are you looking for photographs, or are you wanting to feel something?
If you just want pictures, you can grab a smart phone. But you know that with a smart phone it takes luck to finally get a pic that you truly love. What you want is to connect, tell a story, provoke emotion. You want something that you can hold onto, both physically and emotionally. And you don't want to rely on getting lucky, because who knows when that will happen.
Time waits for nobody. What are you waiting for?

This Sunday, four of six Brake sisters will meet up for the where three of us will cheer for the one running the 26.2. I smile to myself when I think about it because it will inevitably involve a lot of silliness, close quarters, chaos, and laughter that might even devolve into crying. Most of us are separated by several hundreds of miles and many years, but ultimately we are from the same place.
Who can relate? When did you last see your sister?
And when was the last time you were photographed together?

Everyone has a story to tell and every story is worth hearing. What's yours?
Creating images that are truly your own require more than an appointment with a photographer. How do you construct the statement(s) that you want to make?
Careful consideration of lighting, colors (or lack thereof,) backdrop, props, wardrobe, posing, expression, and even cropping and choice of lens can take an image from ok to YES, from standard to eyecatching.
Go through the photos again. See what mood comes to mind with each one. What elements do you think contribute to that feeling?

—whether her favorite top is clean or dirty.
—which colors spark her imagination.
—that letting go is fun sometimes.
—that she’ll never be at this point in her life again.
The specifics may change over time, but they’ll always be a part of her.
