A year from now, this version of your family will no longer exist.

That’s not a dark thought. It’s actually the whole reason family photography matters.

Your youngest will be walking by then. Your oldest will have dropped a word they mispronounce right now, the one that makes everyone in the family laugh. You’ll have moved furniture, painted a room, grown your hair out or cut it short.

Families change and evolve constantly. And the version you are right now - today, this month, this year - is one that won’t come back.

I’ve worked with families in Seattle for over 5 years, and the thing I hear most from returning clients is “I can’t believe how much has changed.” They look at images from two years ago and see a version of their kids they’d already forgotten. A gap-toothed smile. A haircut. An expression that belonged only to that particular year.

Documenting ordinary life is not ordinary. It’s one of the most significant things you can do for your family’s story.

One of the most common things I hear from expecting moms is:

“I want maternity photos, but I just don’t feel like myself right now.”

I totally understand and feelings are so valid but also? That’s exactly why this season deserves to be documented.

I have 3 kids, and while I have maternity photos from my first pregnancy, I never took them with my other pregnancies.

Not because I didn’t value photography. Not because I didn’t want the memories. I simply didn’t feel like myself.

I felt huge. Uncomfortable. Like my body wasn’t really my own anymore. The thought of stepping in front of a camera was the last thing I wanted to do. So I told myself I’d skip it.

At the time, it felt like the right decision.

Now, years later, I wish I had those photos.

Pregnancy asks so much of your body. It changes daily. Some days you feel beautiful. Some days you feel swollen, exhausted, and completely unfamiliar to yourself.

But years from now, when your baby is no longer a baby, you won’t look at these photos and think about the things you worried about. You’ll remember what it felt like to carry them. The anticipation. The excitement. The wonder.

Your pregnant body is not something that needs to be “fixed” before it’s photographed. It’s creating life, and that is already worthy of being remembered.

You don’t need to feel perfectly confident or completely ready. You just need to show up. I’ll take care of the rest.

As a Seattle family photographer, I often get asked what I love photographing most.

The answer is always: mother and child.

There is something about that connection and that particular closeness that never gets old for me. Every motherhood session tells a different story, but at the heart of each one is the same beautiful truth: to a child, mom is home.

Getting to preserve that connection - the one that changes every day and yet somehow remains the same - is one of my greatest privileges as a photographer.

These are the images I hope become family treasures. The ones that remind your children not just what you looked like, but how it felt to be loved by you.

A few months ago, we were documenting the excitement of waiting for this little one during their maternity session… and now here we are, capturing tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and the overwhelming love that fills a home when a baby arrives.

She’s a first-time mom, but you’d never know it. She carried herself with the kind of calm and intuition that can’t really be taught. The kind of intuition that just comes naturally to moms (iykyk).

Documenting those first days of motherhood is truly such an honor. The early days pass in such a blur, but the connection, the tenderness, and the way your whole world changes overnight… those are the moments you’ll be remembering years down the road.

If you’re expecting or newly postpartum and looking for someone to document this season with you, I would love to chat. 🤍

Is it worth a late bedtime? Yes.
A potential meltdown in the parking lot? Also probably yes.

Golden hour light is unlike anything else — it’s soft, flattering, and creates the most beautiful photos. As a Seattle family photographer, golden hour is my absolute favorite time to shoot. But if you have a toddler, keeping them up until 8pm can feel daunting. As a mom of three, I get it. But I also promise you - it’s worth it.

Sharing advice I’ve collected over the years of late evening sessions with toddlers. Save for later or share with a friend 🤍
