I’m going to hold your hand when I say this, but “Say cheese” is probably the fastest way to ruin a family photo.

There, I said it. 😂

When you ask everyone to smile at the camera, you usually get exactly that: everyone smiling at the camera. It looks nice. But it doesn’t tell you much about the people in the photo.

With kids, I’d much rather talk to them and see where the session goes. I’ll ask about whatever they’re talking about, make a dumb joke, get down on their level, and let them be a little weird.

The parents usually loosen up pretty quickly when they realize they don’t have to keep getting everyone to look at the camera. And that’s when I start getting the photos I want.

After 5 years of photographing families around Seattle, I’ve found that the less I direct a family to “look here” and “smile,” the more natural the photos feel.

I want you to look back at them and remember what your kids were actually like at that age, not just what they looked like when someone told them to smile.

And just like that, summer is over.

Our 10-day Michigan getaway is officially done. The suitcases are definitely still not unpacked, and somehow we woke up this morning to the first day of school. I’m not quite ready to trade late summer nights, lake days, and nowhere-to-be mornings for packing lunches and school drop-offs.

Our oldest is heading into 3rd grade, and somehow my middle girl is a KINDERGARTENER. Someone please explain how that’s possible?!

Seeing her in her little uniform this morning was such a bittersweet moment. She looked so grown up — a little more independent, a little more sure of herself, my little big girl. I’m so proud of her, but also wondering how we got here so quickly.

I think moments like this are why photographs mean so much to me. The days move fast, and our kids change in ways we don’t always notice until suddenly they’re standing in front of us looking a little less like our babies and a little more like the people they’re becoming.

Anyway, cheers to a new school year, new adventures, and remembering to slow down enough to notice it all. 🤍

A little full-circle moment for me. Brittany was the photographer whose worked I admired waaaay before photography was ever on my radar. She’s photographed my family since I was pregnant with my first baby and every year since then. Getting to stand on the other side of the lens this time around felt really special and kind of wild and I love the sun-soaked photos we were able to capture at Discovery Park.

As a Seattle Maternity Photographer, I often get asked if I provide maternity dresses or help with what to wear?

Yes - and honestly, what you wear has a LOT of impact on your final images, so I don’t want you figuring it out alone.

Every maternity session includes styling assistance and my styling guide, plus access to my curated client closet. And if you’re shopping and wondering “Is this the one?”, text me. Seriously. Send me photos, ask questions, show me your options. I actually love helping with this part and always happy to weign in.

As for what to wear, it really depends on the look you love.

🤍 Flowy dresses create that soft, ethereal, feminine feeling and photograph beautifully with movement.

🤍 Something more modern - an open belly, a two-piece look, a fitted dress, or even something a little unexpected - can feel more editorial and contemporary.

Most importantly: be comfortable. If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit, pulling something down, or worrying about how it looks, that’s going to show up in the photos. The best outfits are the ones that let you move, breathe, and actually enjoy being pregnant.

You don’t need to know exactly what will photograph well. That’s what I’m here for. 🤍

Are maternity photos really worth it?

Honestly? I think so. But probably not for the reason you think.

You’re not going to look back at these photos and think, Wow, I was so good at being pregnant.

You’re going to notice things you didn’t realize you’d miss.

The shape of your belly.
The way your toddler is still your baby, even as you get ready to welcome another.
The little moments of this season that felt completely ordinary at the time.

And maybe you’ll remember that you actually were beautiful, even on the days you didn’t feel that way.

I know maternity photos can feel like one more thing to spend money on when you’re already preparing for a baby. But pregnancy is temporary in a way that’s hard to understand while you’re in it.

One day, this version of you will only exist in photographs.

And if you’re looking for a Seattle maternity photographer, that’s the part I want to give you—not just pretty pictures, but something tangible to hold onto when this season is long over.

Every once in a while, everything just clicks.

Mom was all in and brought so much positivity and ease to the session. Her little one was playful and smiley the entire time, and we laughed, danced, and ran our way through the evening. It was easy in the best possible way.

These are the moments motherhood is made of. And those are the sessions that leave you driving home with a full heart (and smiling again when you deliver the gallery weeks later).

The hardest part of this session was narrowing it down to just 10 images to share here, because there were so many little moments I didn’t want to leave out.

Waiting until the kids are “easier to photograph” is the most common thing families say right before they run out of time.

I hear this all the time. The toddler is in a phase. The baby isn’t walking yet. The 5-year-old recently decided she hates cameras.

And I get it. If this season feels hard, waiting for a calmer one makes intuitive sense.

But as a mom of 3, I can tell you there is no calmer season. There’s just a different one. It doesn’t get easier. It gets different.

The toddler phase passes and is replaced by the fiercely independent 8-year-old phase (ask me how I know). The baby starts walking and becomes the preschooler who won’t stand still. The 5-year-old who hates cameras becomes the 12-year-old who’s genuinely self-conscious in front of one.

The families with photos they truly treasure aren’t the ones who waited until things were perfect. They’re the ones who decided this season was worth documenting anyway.

This exact, messy, beautiful version of your family is worth remembering.

Not the future version.

This one.

Don’t skip maternity photos.

That’s it. That’s the caption.

Jk, though every mom tells me the same thing: she came this close to skipping her maternity session. Not one of them is glad she didn’t.

These photos aren’t really about the bump. They’re about you, in the middle of one of the most transformative seasons of your life. And that’s worth more than a blurry mirror selfie (though keep taking those too).

If you’re due this fall or winter, I’d love to help you remember this season. Link in bio to inquire. 🤍

My superpower? Getting kids to warm up. 🤍

Not every kid runs into a session ready to smile and snuggle (and honestly, same). Some need a little time to observe, warm up, and decide I’m someone they want to hang out with.

But by the time we leave, we’re usually besties.

Funny enough, I realized I had this “kid magic” long before I ever had kids of my own. In my 20s, I was working as a software engineer and had zero plans for motherhood on the horizon. But I noticed my coworkers’ kids would always gravitate toward me — they’d find me at office events, show me their toys, or just sit next to me and tell me their life stories. I was baffled.

Now, as a mom of 3, I understand kids in a whole new way. I know when to be silly, when to let them lead, and when to give them the space to feel comfortable being themselves.

And those are always my favorite moments - when the shy little one starts to open up and their personality shines through.
