St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall

There’s something timeless about St Michael’s Mount. On this visit, the tide was out, leaving the harbour almost empty and the fishing boats resting on the sand beneath the castle. With breaks in the clouds allowing patches of light across the scene, it felt like a glimpse into Cornwall’s long maritime history.

St Michael’s Mount has been a place of significance for over a thousand years. The island was gifted to the Benedictine monks of Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy in the 11th century and later became both a fortified castle and family home. Today, it remains one of Cornwall’s most iconic landmarks, connected to the mainland by a stone causeway that disappears beneath the sea at high tide.

Standing here, it’s easy to see why generations of sailors, pilgrims, and photographers have been drawn to this remarkable place.

Dan Dan the Lobster Man heading back into Porthleven aboard FH31, with the Atlantic serving up a proper welcome home. The sea was churning, the swell was rolling through, and the water around the harbour entrance looked more like a washing machine than a route home.

For the fishermen who work this coast, it's just another day at the office.

The Lone Tree, Malham

A short walk across the limestone pavement above Malham leads to one of the Yorkshire Dales’ most photographed trees. I’ve seen countless images of this lone tree over the years, but standing there as the evening light began to fade was something else entirely.

The deep limestone fissures created perfect leading lines, drawing the eye through the pavement and straight toward the tree. Overhead, a sky full of fast-moving clouds caught the last warm light of the day, adding just enough drama to complete the scene.

It’s easy to see why photographers keep returning here. Every visit brings different light, different skies, and a different mood.

Ribblehead Viaduct, Yorkshire Dales

Few structures capture the spirit of the Yorkshire Dales quite like Ribblehead Viaduct. Built between 1870 and 1874 as part of the Settle-Carlisle Railway, this remarkable Victorian engineering project stretches across Batty Moss on 24 stone arches and remains one of Britain’s most iconic railway landmarks.

More than 2,000 navvies worked in often brutal weather to construct the viaduct, living in temporary settlements nearby while carving a railway through some of England’s most challenging terrain. Over 150 years later, trains still cross the viaduct daily, a testament to the craftsmanship and determination of those who built it.

I spent a quiet morning here watching the light move across the arches and surrounding fells. The winding path leading toward the viaduct seemed to draw the eye straight into the history of the landscape. Sometimes the simplest compositions tell the biggest stories.

Exploring the Yorkshire Dales around Muker, I wasn’t expecting to find the last of the bluebells still hanging on. But tucked beside this beautiful little footbridge over the River Swale, they were glowing in the afternoon light like spring hadn’t quite finished yet.

The sound of the river, the warm sunshine, and those flashes of violet in the foreground made this scene impossible to walk past without stopping for a photo. Exploring the quieter corners of the Dales often leads to scenes you never planned to find.

A couple of years ago I made the trip out to the Alien Throne in Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah to photograph sunset in this incredible corner of New Mexico. Even now, I still remember watching the light sweep across these strange sandstone formations as the sky started to fill with color.

The landscape out here barely feels real. Every direction looks like something from another world, and as the sun dropped lower the textures and shapes just kept getting better. I waited for the sunstar to peek around the rocks and managed to capture this frame right before the light disappeared.

Definitely one of the most unique places I’ve photographed in the Southwest.

Heading back to the Yorkshire Dales this week and I already know I’ll be making another stop at East Gill Force.

This little waterfall tucked away near Keld has such a calm feel to it. Moss-covered rock, soft flowing water and that deep Yorkshire green everywhere you look. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down for a while and just enjoy being out with the camera.

Looking forward to spending some time back in the Dales.

A year ago I was camped here in Alabama Hills with Charlie tucked between the boulders and the Eastern Sierra towering in the background. Mornings out here were cold, quiet, and simple. Coffee under the awning, camera gear packed and ready, and first light slowly hitting the peaks above camp.

This is the kind of place that keeps pulling me back out onto the road. Wide open spaces, dirt roads, and campsites with views that make you stop for a minute and just take it all in.

Shot on my Canon R5 Mark II.
