I had the pleasure to meet David and Louise St. Clair last week. They are such a humble and loving couple. I was invited to their home by their daughter Laura to take photos of them together in their farm garden and other parts of their property. Laura said they don't have many photos together outside their home. So she reached out to me to see if I could capture some images of them together.

Louise is one of many volutneer staff members that make the Saline Community Fair an annual stellar event. She also runs the books for the family farm operated by her son. Her husband David, 95 years young, is a retired clergyman and Executive Director of the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan. At age 52, I told Dave I hope I look half as good as him in 10 years.

We had a pleasant evening sharing stories of our past and learning about one another's life's experiences. I get tremendous joy meeting wonderful people of the community like Dave and Louise to gain a full perspective of other people's lives and the contributions they have made (and continue to make) to society. Thanks for the invitation Laura. Your parents are anchors to the community. ⚓️ ❤️ 🚜 💐 🐄

The sign represents the Michigan Centennial Farm Program, which was established in 1948 by the Michigan Historical Commission.

The program was designed to recognize working agricultural properties of 10 or more acres that have remained in continuous ownership by the same family for 100 years or more.

The Role of The Detroit Edison Company

From the inception of the program, major Michigan electric utility companies—specifically The Detroit Edison Company (now DTE Energy) and Consumers Power Company (now Consumers Energy)—stepped up to sponsor the iconic metal property signs.

The primary historical reasons for their involvement include:

- Commemorating Rural Electrification: The utility companies provided the physical markers to explicitly commemorate the dramatic advancements electricity brought to farm operations, household productivity, and rural family life during the 20th century.

- Regional Division: Sponsorship was geographically split by service territory. As seen on your specific sign, properties located within southeast Michigan and the greater Detroit region were directly provided markers co-branded by The Detroit Edison Co.. Farms in central and western parts of the state received signs co-branded by Consumers Power.

- Transition of Ownership: In 2008, state budget cuts threatened the program, causing administration to shift from the state commission to the Historical Society of Michigan.
