The communities of coastal Maine are proud of their connection to the sea. Holiday trees made out of lobster fishing gear shows how much we love those little crustaceans.

Here's some fun facts about Maine.

And I'd like to add, in Andover, Maine, Earth Station was where a ground station transmitted the first transatlantic television signal via satellite in 1962. And the last hand-crank telephone system shut down in Bryant Pond,Maine in 1983. Both towns in Oxford County and only 32 miles apart.

One unexpected thrill while on the Fall Foliage Photo Workshop last week happened while we were on a trail in New Hampshire. In the middle of a pine forest, a red maple tree, next to a stream had dropped all of its leaves.

The colors have been inconsistent this year due to the drought, but the stream, perhaps being fed by a spring rather than rain, helped this maple show its colors.

Every fall I chase the New England colors in all of the same places, and never it is the same. Don't hesitate to return to places that you've been. You can still see it through new eyes.

Have you heard that on Tuesday at 3:50am there was an earthquake on the Maine coast near Vinalhaven Island. Folks did feel it, and hear it, on the mainland as well. I have not heard that anyone was hurt, nor if there was any property damage.

I happen to be awake and heard a loud rumbling. It sounded like a big truck was coming, but there were no vehicles passing by on this small country road. I have felt earthquakes in Maine before, but never heard this type of rumbling. And I didn't feel this one at all.

The next Vinalhaven Island Photo Tour is this weekend. Planned for Saturday at this time, but the weather forecast looks like I may need to change that to Sunday.
