One of the coolest waterfalls I’ve ever been to! This was a secret waterfall in Oregon, nobody was there (it was a Saturday) and very few photos of it online. Definitely worth the drive and hike in to!

STEVE (a cool form of Aurora) gliding across the Gunflint Trail in northeastern Minnesota. My patience is limited for a big aurora show, let’s hope something pops before the end of the year!

A lone man (me) stands on a rocky island amongst not only an inland sea, but an ocean of stars. I look up to the stars for guidance from my Guardian Angels during times when I can’t find answers. For the last 10+ years I’ve had to deal with Crohn’s disease, an Autoimmune disease that causes my body to fight against my GI tract. During flare ups I think of nights like these, and how at peace I was mentally and metaphorically, helping me get through a difficult day. Modern medicine does its best to help me with this disease (though many days it’s limited), but I find my hobby of photography and my subject matters, can be just as important.

Perfect alignment of the setting sun behind the Grand Marais lighthouse. The seagull flying behind it just adds to the shot!

Question: Why do seagulls fly over the sea?
Answer: Cuz if they flew over the bay, they’d be bay-gulls…

Rosie skies over the Guardians of the Gunflint in Northern Minnesota. The color in the sky was caused by a nice display of Northern Lights, right after a substorm!

Night skies in some of the darkest skies in the Lower 48. Except it’s not really that dark! The stars shine bright and the Northern Lights dance at night at Isle Royale. Loved being able to get both the Milky Way faint aurora with some of the islands buildings!

In the early 20th century, Scandinavian fisherman called Isle Royale their full time home. With the abundance of Lake Trout, Herring, Menominee, and other white fish, this was a perfect place for commercial fishing. Though so it seemed. See, the remoteness of Isle Royale now was even more pronounced 120 years ago, considering most of the fishing vessels were wood boats barely 25 feet in length. As time passed, the commercial fishing operations faded away and remnants of these times remain scattered throughout islands of the National Park. This “Fisherman’s Camp” (as we call it) is always a favorite place of ours to stop and check out every fall. The Balsam trees appear to be trimmed by humans, but that’s actually from the Moose who feast on these trees in the winter time! The old huts/homes are in fantastic shape even with the horrible weather that slams the island half of the year. Isle Royale is full of hidden gems across its remoteness, you just need to get out there and explore it!

Isle Auroral 2026
While we wait and watch to see if any Northern Lights will dance tonight I was able to watch a nice little show this past weekend at Isle Royale. Was difficult getting a dock out of the wind, but we found this nice dock and it was a great spot! Already looking forward to trips back to the island next year.

King of the Isle
I have returned from another magical trip to Isle Royale National Park which encompassed 5 days and many miles of pure adventure. Every time I come back from this place it makes me think of my next adventure there. This massive Bull Moose swam in front of the Hanks Haven and I have never said “oh sh!t” louder in my life! More pics to come from this amazing trip!
