Getting to photograph this family was such a treat for me. 🤍

I’ve known mom for a while now, so getting to spend an afternoon documenting this season for them felt a lil extra special.

And we didn’t have to force or dream up new ideas to make this an enjoyable session for anyone (including the kids!)

The boys showed me what they love to do (making mud pies, playing with their magnet tiles, eating popsicles, spraying mom with the hose lol) and I simply stepped in here and there to help tell their story a little more beautifully.

Because that’s where the magic of their story is, not having me script their entire day and create inauthentic, smiling at the camera moments, but rather letting their session unfold without interference.

Photographing a family’s Friday night pizza tradition, sign me up!

Do they normally eat pizza in this room? Nope. 😂

But this room had the most beautiful light in the house, so instead of recreating every detail exactly as it happens, we brought their tradition to the light.

The paper plates stayed, the pizza box stayed, and the chaos of feeding four little kids stayed.

But documentary family photography isn’t about creating a perfect reenactment and instead preserving what matters most in a way that’s honest AND beautiful.

Learning to work this way helped me stop feeling limited by a home’s “best” room and start seeing how light could help tell a family’s story.

I love my business, I really truly do.

But I love my family MORE. 🤍

And I’ve learned that if I want to enjoy a vacation and be present with my loved ones, I can’t spend the whole trip halfway there and halfway in my inbox.

So I do a little extra work before I leave, tie up loose ends, and then I give myself permission to fully check out (and kinda force myself too lol)

Your business will still be there when you get home, the vacation you’re on right now won’t.

I don’t think photographers set out to build a fall they dread.

I think they’re excited, they want to serve people well, and they don’t want to turn anyone away.

So they say yes, and then yes again, and 783 “yes’s” later they’re wondering why their favorite season suddenly feels so heavy.

I’ve been there!

And the biggest thing I’ve learned is that your fall calendar doesn’t magically happen to you, you get to shape it.

You get to decide what kind of photographer you want to be this fall, what kind of experience you want to give your clients, and what kind of life you want to have outside of your business, too!
