When people think about maternity photos, they usually picture the baby bump.
I kept finding myself looking somewhere else.

At the ice cream drips.
The lemonade stand.
The blur of kids who couldn't stand still long enough to pose.

Because this wasn't just a maternity session.
It was the last summer afternoon this family would spend as five.

In a few short weeks there will be another little voice around the dinner table. Another car seat to buckle. Another sibling to chase through the backyard.

Everything will be just a little bit different.

And that's exactly why we documented this version, too.

Not because it's ending.
But because it's about to become something new.

Before it Changes.

The moment you become a parent doesn't begin with a title.

It begins here.

One breath.
One cry.
One tiny hand wrapped around your finger.

Happy Parent Appreciation Day to everyone in the middle of raising little humans, to those watching theirs grow far too quickly, and to the parents who carry their children in a different way.

Every chapter of parenthood matters. 🤍

When Mom described what she wanted documented, one line stuck with me.

"Leaving the kitchen a mess."

Because dinner can wait.
The dishes can wait.

These girls won't always race outside barefoot to check for eggs, cuddle ducklings, feed chickens, or dance in a summer rainstorm.

Halfway through the session the rain finally showed up. Most people would pack it in.

Instead, the girls spun circles with their faces pointed toward the sky while Mom and Dad stood nearby smiling underneath an umbrella.

The animals still needed feeding. The swings still needed swinging. The rain simply became part of the story.

Before it Changes isn't about perfect weather.

It's about remembering what your evenings actually felt like.

National Ice Cream Day feels like the perfect excuse to share one of my favorite moments from this summer.

A little Saturday reminder that I still photograph births. 🤍

There's nothing quite like documenting the moment your family changes forever.

My fall calendar is very limited, so if you're expecting this autumn and have been thinking about birth photography, now is a good time to reach out.

Most evenings don't feel important while you're living them.

Dinner's cooking while someone can't find a shoe. The dog is running laps around the yard. One kid is upside down for no reason. Another is asking for a popsicle before dinner. Someone remembers the bikes just as the sun starts dropping.

It's loud.
It's messy.
Nobody's sitting still.

And somehow... these are the evenings we'll miss the most.

When Mom filled out her Before it Changes questionnaire, she didn't ask for perfect portraits. She wanted the ordinary.

The backyard. The Blackstone. The hose. The dog. One more bike ride before bedtime.

The moments tucked between the activities are usually the first to disappear from memory because they feel so normal.

Until they aren't anymore.

This is exactly why Before it Changes exists.

Somewhere along the way, my photography changed.

Or maybe I did.

For years, I chased the milestones—the births, the newborns, the big moments families never want to forget.

Now, I find myself looking for something different.

The moments that almost nobody thinks to photograph.

Dad making dinner while the kids run through the yard.
Rainstorms that interrupt farm chores.
Muddy feet after playing in red clay.
A little girl giving her baby doll a shower with the garden hose because, of course she needed one too.

Those moments are ordinary right up until they become memories.

That's why I created Before it Changes.

I'm still taking a handful of birth clients each year, but this season of my business is about documenting the beautiful, everyday life that happens after the milestones. The life you'll miss someday, even if it feels completely ordinary today.

I can't wait to share these families with you.
