An outdoor wedding in a field, surrounded by their favorite people. Cornelius Pass Roadhouse is one of those venues with enough character that you don’t need to manufacture much. Just let people enjoy themselves and pay attention to what happens.

Amy and Michael didn’t need to make their wedding bigger to make it meaningful.

A courthouse. Twenty people. Some time wandering around downtown Portland. A really good dinner at Campana.

Sometimes that’s 150 people and a packed dance floor. Sometimes it’s getting married on a Wednesday, raising a glass over dinner, and running through a tunnel made by your favorite people.

The scale of the wedding has very little to do with the size of the celebration.

Glass, lines, reflections, big empty spaces. Black and white even though the algorithm hates it.

I can move in close when a photograph needs intimacy and way back when the architecture deserves to be part of the story.

None of that requires turning a wedding into a photoshoot.

That’s the distinction I care about with documentary wedding photography. I don’t need to control what’s happening in front of my camera to have an opinion about how I photograph it.

They get to be themselves. I get to be a photographer.
