Our family, My lighthouse.
My mother-in-law painted a dish for me for Christmas with a quote by Samuel Johnson. โTo be happy at home is the ultimate result of all ambition.โ I looked up at her, and said, โI agree.โ She responded, โI thought you wouldโ. โบ๏ธ I felt very seen and understood. It meant so much to me.
This year I coerced my family into getting a tintype done. Very old fashioned and strange, some would think. I canโt exactly explain why I wanted to do this, I just felt so drawn in to the images Annie, of , was creating. She was wonderful to work with and I cherish what she created for us. What a different approach to taking a photo! We were all involved and a part of making the image. As much as I love candid portraits, there is something I also love about the careful placement of each person (even the dog) for the 5 seconds we are still, exposing light onto the plate. It slows everything way down, putting awareness onto the self and the group you are a part of and equally effecting. The evolution of photography fascinates me. Plus, the glass and depth of field are so beautiful. It feels like looking through an old glass window back in time.
This form of photography is the only kind we have from our ancestors past. This is the only way we can get an understanding of them, by looking at photos that look like this! Itโs interesting to put a modern day family in the same scenario and see in the result: that we are not so different after all. Just humans, being.

I love this look and am so glad we did this. Thank you Annie, for being so open and enthusiastic about your process with me. I am looking forward to learning more!
We used this as a holiday card photo this year. ๐
HAPPY HOLIDAYS & NEW YEAR, Friends! XOXO
