There was much drama at the Purple Martin nesting boxes at Eckman Lake on Saturday! I witnessed what seemed to be the female trying to drag a bird settled in the box out by it's head - while both male and female yelled at it. This happened over and over. At first I thought they might be harassing a Tree Swallow who I had seen bringing in nesting material last month. Then I wondered if she was actually feeding a baby - but it is far too early in the Purple Martin season for that. After care examination we realized it was indeed another Purple Martin in the box and that these birds do have territorial fights over nesting boxes. Wow! Quite the bird soap opera taking place!
