Volume I, Plate 02 — Mystic Waters.

The second plate in this week's release. Same morning as yesterday's Edge of the World, a few hours earlier, on the way down to the bottom of Boardman.

The arch wasn't the dangerous part. The wet rocks on the other side were. I started slipping, made it sideways to the cliff face before I could really fall, dug in, stopped, and breathed for a minute. Not a place I wanted to fall.

The storm was rolling in from the Pacific — which on the Oregon Coast means you have minutes to decide. I set up fast. The light was that brief window between cloud and rain where everything goes saturated and you stop second-guessing.

Eight exposures in about ten minutes. This is one of them. It remains the best-selling print of my career.

One coast. One morning. One window. This is what I came back with.

Volume I, Plate 03 — Face Rock.

Third plate in this week's release. I'd seen Face Rock photographed many times before I went — almost always at sunset, with the rock turned into a silhouette and the sky doing the work. I wanted to photograph it the other direction.

The morning I drove down to Bandon, the marine layer was breaking up in patches and the wind was moving the clouds across the sky faster than I expected. I set up before the sun cleared the eastern hills and waited.

The first real light came through a gap in the cloud — a single shaft raking across the rock from the upper left. It lit the texture in the stone in a way I'd never seen in any of the photographs I'd studied before going. The bruised blue-gray sky stayed dark behind it. The whole frame happened in maybe two minutes. Then the cloud closed and the light was gone.

The place is called Face Rock because the Coquille (Nasomah) people have a story about a princess named Ewauna whose face is said to be visible in the offshore stack. That story belongs to the Coquille and is theirs to tell — I'd recommend seeking it out from the Coquille Indian Tribe or from Coquille storytellers if you want to know more.

Introducing The Working Frame — a new daily series from J. Burke Photos.

For years I produced OC Waves Monthly. It was work that went out into the world on a rhythm I came to love — a monthly cadence, a body of work building issue by issue. Then I changed careers, and OC Waves went quiet. I've missed that cadence ever since.

So I'm building a new one. This time, a photo a day — each one with the story behind it.

This is Volume I. Six prints, one a day this week. I wanted it to feel less like a product drop and more like a publication — photographs that hold together, that tell a story across the wall.

Plate 01 is Edge of the World.

Samuel H. Boardman, on a side trail most photographers don't take. To get the composition I had to lean out over a 250-foot drop with one hand braced against a Sitka spruce. The light was failing. The rain was about to win.

I haven't shown this image much. I think I was saving it for myself. It's time to let other people stand at this edge too.

I shoot a ton of events. I rarely share them here. This year I am going to start sharing more of this work. I love shooting athletes at the top of their game. Even better to meet some truly great humans like the Tice family. Can't wait to shoot the whole family this season. Taylor Tice shown here at @agate_beach_surf_classic

Thought I would post another from the Tulip Festival. I really liked the bright colors and the moody sky. Almost like they are trying to outdo each other.

Happy spring.
I almost missed it this year.

I photographed this tulip last spring and rediscovered it a few weeks ago while digging through images for an installation. Funny how certain photographs arrive at the right moment twice.

Hope all the mothers had a wonderful weekend.
