The leopard’s camouflage is so incredible that it can be incredibly difficult to spot it... 😮

Capturing an image like this is one of the most coveted achievements for wildlife photographers. It’s no easy task, as this elusive feline lives in some of the most inhospitable places on Earth, including the Himalayan mountains. On top of that, its beautifully patterned coat allows it to blend almost perfectly into its surroundings.

A taxidermy lion from the 1700s.

In 1731 King Frederick I of Sweden was gifted a lion, one of the first lions in Scandinavia. When the lion died shortly after, it was given to a taxidermist and this was the end product. The taxidermist and the museum keepers had never actually seen a lion alive before, and did not know how they were supposed to look. As a result, the resulting mount was especially anatomically inaccurate, most apparent in its face.

The photograph looks staged. It is not. Mathieu Shamavu took a selfie at the orphaned gorilla center in Virunga National Park in eastern Congo in 2019, and two young females stood up on their hind legs behind him and posed, bellies out, one of them with an almost human slouch.

They stand like that because they were raised among people. They copy the posture of the humans who brought them up.

Ndakasi, on the left, was found in 2007 at two months old, clinging to her mother after armed men had gone through the family. Her caretaker, Andre Bauma, got her through the first night by holding her against his bare chest. He looked after her for the next fourteen years.

She passed away in September 2021, aged 14, in his arms. He said it had been a privilege to care for such a loving creature, and that it was her sweet nature and her intelligence that helped him understand the connection between people and great apes.
