The journey to the A.K. Shaifer House, the site of the first skirmish of the Battle of Port Gibson, was as challenging as it was rewarding. I drove along a narrow dirt road, teetering on the edge of a kudzu-filled canyon, only to find a locked gate. After rerouting, I encountered a rickety bridge over Buck Creek, which I decided not to cross by Jeep. Instead, I parked, packed some water, and began a picturesque hike.

My books are on the shelf at Lorelei Books in downtown Vicksburg now too.

1103 Washington Street. An 1880s building on the bluff above the river. The old stories say it started as a post-Civil War saloon — and, if the locals are right, a brothel. Now it’s a bookstore. That feels about right for Vicksburg.

Regional authors. Southern history. The kind of independent shop that still has a soul.
