SLOVENIA 🇸🇮 - CANYONING - Despite my love of ice and snow through photography while in my snowshoes, I do not enjoy swimming or plunging into cold water. Canyoning (essentially a way of exploring a canyon from top to bottom) in a cold mountain stream is something I thought I’d never do. But, doesn’t it look fun?? So this excursion during our 30th wedding anniversary trip was my idea. Over a year ago I booked a guide with and the day has finally arrived. We set out with 3 Slovenians to Canyon Grmecica on the edge of Triglav (3glav) National Park. We donned 3 mm wetsuits and rappelling gear, and set off hiking upward until we reached the start of the canyon. We then rappelled, jumped, scrambled, slid and swam back down inside the canyon. Every once in a while you’ve just got to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. I can tell you the 4 things that got me through this: (1) I felt safe with our wonderful guide (Thank You Urban!), (2) the incredible beauty - I’m talking 5 full senses here - of the canyon, (3) watching my husband of 30 years doing this with me and (4) literally turning my brain off. I’m not an extreme sports person, heck I literally haven’t even jumped into a pool since I’ve been married, so stepping on the edge of a cliff and ‘launching confidently’ toward the cold and deep water below was only going to happen if I didn’t look too long or put much thought into it. And at the end when Urban offered a bonus of floating back to the car in the cold river, heck I couldn’t get enough of it, so into the rapid current we went (last photo). Here’s to 30 years of marriage, still having fun, adventuring to new places, trying new things, and doing it again for the next 30 years.
