The hardest part about having a senior dog is knowing time moves faster than we want it to.

For Kelly, Teddy’s portrait session wasn’t just about getting updated photos of her 9-year-old Golden Retriever. It was about creating something that captured the relationship they’ve built over the last nine years.

Teddy has been through a lot of life with Kelly, and it was clear from the moment they walked into the studio how comfortable they are together.

He was exactly who she described: sweet, happy, treat-motivated, and very well-mannered. He also brought plenty of personality, including the little bottom teeth that made an appearance throughout the session and gave him the funniest expressions. 😂

My favorite part of this session was seeing how naturally Teddy and Kelly interacted. Nothing felt forced. He simply wanted to be near her, and those moments ended up creating some of my favorite portraits from their session.

They're completely one of a kind. ❤️

One of my favorite parts of photographing mixed-breed dogs is that there are no expectations. No breed standard. No "they're all like this."

Every dog brings their own personality, quirks, expressions, and little surprises into the studio—and that's exactly what makes them so much fun to photograph.

When Miranda reached out about photographing her dog... there was one tiny detail.

There was also a cat.

Now, there's a reason I'm called The Dog Photog. 😅

I've photographed cats before, but always in their own homes. This was my very first cat in the studio (though I'd photographed others in their homes), and I told Miranda exactly what I'd tell anyone:

"I can't guarantee what a cat will do... but I'm absolutely willing to give it a shot."

And honestly? It couldn't have gone much better.

Neko, the sweetest black Lab mix, was everything you'd expect from a Lab—happy, eager, food-motivated, and thrilled to be involved in whatever we were doing.

Brie, on the other hand, fully embraced her role as the cat.

She joined the photos when she felt like it.
Ignored us when she didn't.
And reminded us all that treats are suggestions, not instructions.

My favorite portrait from the session perfectly captured their personalities. Miranda and Nico were sitting together beautifully while Brie casually wandered into the frame, sat as far away as possible while still technically participating, and looked completely content with that decision.

Honestly... it was perfect.

Because that's what I love most about these sessions.

I'm not trying to force animals into someone else's idea of the "perfect" portrait. Whether it's a dog, a cat, or both, my job is to work with the personality that's in front of me—not against it.

Those genuine moments always end up being the ones people treasure most.

Most people picture a dog photo shoot with kids the same way…

✨ Everyone is smiling.
✨ The dog is sitting perfectly.
✨ The kids are looking at the camera.
✨ Somehow, it all comes together on the first try.

Reality? That's almost never how it happens.

And honestly... that's a good thing.

The best dog portraits with kids aren't about getting everyone to hold the perfect pose. They're about capturing the relationship that's already there.

Maybe that's a little one wrapping their arms around their best friend.

Maybe it's an older sibling who's grown up with the family dog.

Or maybe it's a toddler giggling because the dog decided kisses were more important than looking at the camera.

Every relationship is different, and I don't try to force every family into the same Pinterest-perfect pose.

Instead, I let dogs be dogs, kids be kids, and create space for genuine moments to happen.

Winston and Riley are proof that sometimes dogs find their way to you separately… and somehow end up looking like they were always meant to be a pair.

These two German Shepherd mixes came into Brittany and Jordan’s lives from different places, but you’d swear they were siblings. Same coloring, same expressive faces, but completely different personalities!

Winston brought the confidence (and his impressive kangaroo ears). Riley brought the enthusiasm — especially when belly rubs were involved.

During their studio session, we focused less on “perfect poses” and more on capturing the little things that make them them: their connection, their quirks, and the moments their humans know by heart.

The hardest part? Narrowing down their gallery. We ended up with nearly 100 images because apparently these two pups decided every expression deserved a spot. (Honestly… they made a pretty convincing argument.)

This is exactly why I love photographing dogs the way I do — not just how they look, but who they are right now.

The first few minutes of a session probably look like nothing is happening.

Your dog is sniffing the floor. Checking out the corners. Investigating every single smell left behind by the dogs who came before them.

But I promise you—this is part of the work.

I know it can be tempting to think, "Okay, are we ready to start taking photos yet?" (I get it. You're excited. I'm excited.)

But after 5 years of photographing dogs, I know that rushing this part usually makes everything harder. A dog who hasn't had a chance to settle is much less predictable, and it's a lot harder to capture those relaxed, genuine expressions we're actually here for.

Every dog gets 5–15 minutes to explore. I let them decide when they're ready.

Because the goal isn't a dog who immediately walks in and performs. The goal is creating a fun experience for you and your dog with some amazing photos at the end.

The goal is a dog who feels comfortable enough to be themselves.
