Can you believe handsome little Prince, here, is 16 years old?

While we were on a shoot recently, Prince happened to be wandering off leash, and was likely going to get in the way of the shoot.

Rather than yell at the owner to leash the dog, I opted to suggest we take some photos of Prince, and that we could have him stay still for photos better if we leashed him up. These photos were all taken with him on leash, and the leash was removed during retouching.

Yes, we turned to positivity, and I gave away some free work, to make a challenging situation a bit more positive. And I hope that this post inspires you to do the same. ❤️

Here are the photos I snapped of Prince. He was not super comfortable with me or the situation, but a good photographer knows how to read dogs, get the shot quickly, and move on. Believe it or not, I was able to get hands on this feisty fellow and give him some scratches which he leaned deeply into!

Don’t you just love a dog who is this excited for training?

Yeah, me too!

These are photos I took at a training seminar this weekend. They’re taken and edited with the style in which I do event/lifestyle photos, which is relatively quick and simple!

The priorities - good exposure, nice framing, and tack sharp focus are always met in images I deliver. But for event photos, I typically spend a little less time thinking about lens choice, visual balance in the frame, dramatically shifting the lighting, and whether there are distractions for the viewer in the scene. Those thoughts are saved for my fine art work.

The best part is: both approaches are print-worthy! They reflect different aspects of the dog in their environment.

A few sneak peeks for Grace from our session with two of her beautiful pups this past weekend! She has such a beautiful relationship with both of them and I’m so glad I got to witness it first hand!

These sneak peeks are images that are retouched with basic software to show the intended creative direction for the photos. They will undergo a few final finishing touches to finalize before being added to the session gallery.

Sharing some Monday motivation for you to hone your craft!

First image is a photo I took this weekend. Second image is one I took a few years ago. Same handler, same field, different dogs, different skill set by possessed the same photographer 😁

I absolutely love learning photography and if I’m honest, sometimes it feels like I’m not progressing at all. But when I get a rare moment to look back, I can really see the progress! I invite you to look back on something you’ve been working on and see how far you’ve come along!!

It’s been some time since I did a session, and as someone who is introspective and self-critical, I didn’t expect to get a response to offering a few sessions via stories for this weekend on 4 days’ notice.

So imagine my delight when people reached out indicating interest! I am so appreciative of the support and I am so glad it helped put my inner critic away, at least for the time being.

I feel reinvigorated to be thinking about the dogs I will be shooting as well as their handlers and what everyone wants/needs! Just happy to be back at it!!

Now, I’m giving some content I shared along with the ad a permanent spot on the feed. It represents work I’m proud of for a number of reasons - stretching my abilities at the shoot, during the retouching process, or both! As always, feel free to let me know what’s your favorite!!

Whether it’s the structure of a trial field or a quieter, more open space like a park, what I’m paying attention to as a photographer is the same thing…

I’m looking at the dog in front of me: their intensity, their expression, and the small details that make them who they are, not just what they do.

I love to capture dogs exactly as they are, in the places they’re a part of, whether that’s the trial field or out in nature. And I really love to weave the environment into the scene to tell a story.
