The Tree Yoga Cooperative is a sanctuary right in South LA. This space offers grounding care, joy, and community through the practice of yoga. For me, it’s somewhere I return to for that warm, familiar feeling of home. I was honored to capture several of the teachers of The Tree through my lens last year, and it was the flame needed to reignite my passion for photography.
Through the ancient practice of yoga and intentional, embodied connection, the Tree is a safe and loving retreat back to what truly matters—tending to ourselves, turning inward, so we can live life from a regulated, peaceful place, thus making the world more peaceful. Most teachers here are BIPOC, and it was an honor to capture their presence with care—holding true to the richness of melanin rather than washing it out.
There is deep beauty in witnessing Black bodies and Black leadership within a healing practice that has not always been accessible or inclusive for us. These images of Black Women, moving through some empowering asana, in a warmly lit studio, reflects that reclamation, softness, and strength—an intimate return to self, and to home. Jayde
