Happy Juneteenth

Two years ago we started “What’s Your Story?”. Everard Williams and I set up an ArtCenter booth at the Leimert Park Juneteenth celebration where students made and gifted portraits to over 50 attendees. Over the course of the next year Manjari Sharma joined in and we continued the project gifting hundreds of portraits at cultural events across the LA Basin. But we’re not done yet. The project took a hiatus while I was on sabbatical but we’ll be back this Fall. Look for us at events throughout the city and help us approach an equitable portrait of diversity that adds to the representation of our great city. Pictured above, from Juneteenth 2022:

My hotel is only five minutes from the Vatican. I thought I had booked a different location, closer to the Coliseum, but so it is. There’s a lot more Catholic iconography around me.
I was able to catch the Pope on the big screen make a statement regarding just before the rains started.
Then the statues along the Ponte San Angelo were in perfect light as the skies briefly opened up asI headed south toward Circo Massimo. Along the way, a downpour caused me to seek shelter in the Santa Maria in Campitelli where the relics of San Giovanni Leonardi are held.
The spectacle of the interior is stunning, perhaps designed to overwhelm any concern for Leonardi’s role in the brutal treatment of protestants in his fervor to stop the reformation.

As I eat my pizza at an alley cafe off Borgo San Angelo, there’s a roving duet, accordion and guitar, playing a mashup of My Way and Somewhere Over the Rainbow. They skillfully transition between the two and if you didn’t recognize the tune, you’d think it was one song.

It’ll take a while to feel this is normal.

As I have final meals, learn how to make chitara and wax sentimental, I know I will share this journey for the rest of my life. And while I hope to return, there isn’t a person here who hasn’t told me they know I will be back. Perhaps it’s obvious, I have never mastered the poker face.
