I shot this set with Nikki, and watching her on screen this week was really cool and not surprising. She is one of the new cast members on Netflix’s Outlast: The Jungle, the survival competition that drops sixteen strangers into the Panamanian jungle to compete for a million dollars. Congratulations, Nikki Hru !!!
People are seeing her as a competitor. She is also a boxer, an actress, and a model. The discipline of a fighter and the ease of someone who knows how to move in front of a camera as a model is really diverse. In these images, I wanted color, edge, imaginary wonder with a little softness in this editorial set, and she gave me every bit of it.
This is the kind of portrait and branding photography work I love building with people who are about to step into a bigger spotlight. If you are an athlete, performer, or founder who needs imagery that keeps up with where you are headed, this is what I do.

Shooting on the shoreline in Jamaica meant working fast with the water, the light, and the model all moving at once. I wanted the warmth of the morning sun to do the heavy lifting, so I kept her low to the sand where the tide could catch the frame. She brought the confidence and the ease, and my job was to read the light and call the moments as they happened. Some of my favorite portraits come from sessions like this, where the location does half the work and the rest is timing.

These downtown Los Angeles photographs were so much fun to create a bold energy that was required to capture look.
There is something so good about shooting at night in the city. The darkness, the street lights, and the feel of downtown create a completely different atmosphere from a daytime session, and it always opens up space for images that feel striking and full of attitude. Plus, I get to try some flash photography.
For me, portraits are at their best when they reflect not just how someone looks, but how they carry themselves. This photoshoot felt strong, stylish, and unapologetically expressive.
