We're Steve and Bernadette, a husband and wife from Leesburg, Virginia, documenting weddings in DC and everywhere else. It is more than a committed relationship with a 50% chance of failure. We believe that a great marriage will change the world by its impact on everyone that comes into contact with it. This is important. We often get asked what our favorite aspect of photographing a wedding is, and we always say that we love what it does for our own marriage. We are blessed to witness and document stories of couples at their very best. It inspires our own relationship by reminding us why we are on this crazy adventure together. Our goal is to deliver that same inspiration to all of our couples. We want to give every couple their own unique story that captures exactly why they showed up to their wedding so that they have a lasting reminder to always come back to whether things are going well or whether things are incredibly hard. We want every couple to see how they looked at each other. We want every couple to see how they laughed or how they cried. We want them to remember how they felt and never forget. Marriage is THE adventure, and a wedding is the start. Remembering the start with all of its value and meaning is lasting inspiration.

One of the strange things about making photographs is knowing that we only get to see what they mean right now.

Today, these are photographs of Jess and Jon's wedding day. Private vows exchanged quietly. Her maid of honor fanning out her train. Hands finding each other during their first dance. The two of them walking away from their ceremony as husband and wife.

But photographs have a way of becoming more valuable with time.

Ten years from now, they may notice something different. Twenty years from now, they'll bring entire chapters of life with them when they look at these again. A small gesture might feel more familiar. A face in the background more precious. A photograph they barely noticed today might become one they can't imagine being without.

We don't know.

And that's part of what makes this work so meaningful to us.

We're making photographs for the people you are today—but also for versions of you who don't exist yet.

And somehow, we get to send a little piece of your beginning forward to meet them.

Not every photograph needs a profound story behind it.

We were in the middle of portraits when this happened. A veil being adjusted. A pause before whatever we were going to do next. And for just a second, there she was.

We talk a lot about paying attention to the in-between moments of a wedding day—the glances and gestures and people you might otherwise miss. But sometimes paying attention simply means recognizing when something unexpectedly beautiful is right in front of you.

We don't remember directing this. We just remember noticing it. And maybe that's the difference.

Your wedding day is not a photoshoot.

The weather had ideas of its own on Katiana and Wesley's wedding day, and plans shifted along with it. But the beautiful thing is that none of that was actually the story of their day. They held hands and laughed and read private vows to one another. Her parents watched their daughter get married. Wesley picked up his grandfather's Leica and took a photograph of his bride. Katiana laughed with his grandmother. They danced.

The day unfolded, and they were fully in it. And that's where the photographs were.

Of course we'll find beautiful scenes. We'll make time for portraits. We'll step in and direct when it's needed. But we never want the pursuit of a perfect photograph to pull you away from actually experiencing the thing we're there to photograph.

Father-daughter dances hit a little differently after over a decade into being parents. Having two daughters and a son of our own, and maybe that's why moments like this stop us in our tracks more than they used to.

There was so much in this embrace at the end of Kayla and her father's dance. A dad squeezing his daughter tightly, clearly holding onto a girl he has loved for her whole life, while at the same time, so much joy for the life she was beginning.

We know our job is to raise our children and then, little by little, let them go. And we hope that someday we'll get to stand where this father stood: grateful beyond measure for the years we were given with them under our roof, and equally grateful for the person God brings into their lives to love them deeply and bring them joy.

Maybe that's part of what we mean when we say we want photographs to feel like something.

Someday, we want Kayla to look at this one and remember exactly what it felt like to be held by her dad.

Not every photograph needs a big moment.

Sometimes it's just a hug at the dinner table. A laugh with an old friend. Glasses raised together before the party really gets going.

But the people surrounding you on your wedding day aren't incidental to the story.

They're there because at some point, in some way, they became part of your life. They mattered enough to gather in one room to watch you begin this next part of it.

So we pay attention to them, too.

Because years from now, a photograph of someone laughing across the table might mean more than we could possibly know when we take it.

The wedding may be about the two of you.

But the story is also about the people who got you there.

Everyone was hoping for one of those perfect fall days for Lauren and Ross.

Instead, it rained.

But somewhere in her maid of honor's toast, Lauren's sister talked about how Lauren has always been good at finding the light—both literally (she's a photographer, after all) and in the way she moves through life.

And that felt especially fitting after watching this day unfold.

Because there was so much light here. In the joy between Lauren and Ross. In the people who absolutely surrounded them with love. In the beauty and meaning of the Mass. In all the little moments happening in between.

Maybe not the light everyone pictured when they imagined an October wedding. But the kind that mattered.

A few moments we loved from a really beautiful day.

Even after photographing more than 300 weddings, the vows still matter.

Maybe even more than they used to.

We've heard these promises hundreds of times now, spoken beneath cathedral ceilings and under live oaks, read carefully from handwritten pages and repeated word for word after a priest. And somehow, they have never become routine.

Because this is the reason everyone came. The reason for the dress and the flowers and the dinner and the dancing. Two people standing in front of everyone they love and promising their lives to one another.

So when Madi and Charlie opened their vow books that afternoon in Charleston, we paid attention.

Not just because we're supposed to photograph the vows. But because we want them to remember what it felt like to stand there. The weight of the words. The way they looked at one another as they said them. The feeling of hearing the person you love promise you forever.

The words may live on these pages.

But this is what they looked like when they became a promise.

It wasn't supposed to be a crazy day.

But here Dave and Mara were, standing beneath their chuppah on a Cape Cod beach in 50 mph winds, being pelted by sand.

And yet, as their loved ones read from ancient and holy texts, they held onto one another—a literal calm in the storm.

Their guests might not have even seen this small moment unfolding. They were busy shielding their faces with jackets and scarves and hands.

But its significance wasn't lost on us.

And we hope this is a feeling Dave and Mara return to again and again: that when the inevitable crazy days come, they can hold onto one another and find calm in the storm.

We stepped out of our day-to-day in Virginia and into the wonderful wilderness of the West. We chased waterfalls, swam in mountain lakes, hiked through a thunderstorm, maintained a safe distance from wildlife, and (not-pictured) drove for *h o u r s*

But, as all of our road trip adventures tend to do, we grew closer as a family, made some incredible memories, and grew in awe and wonder at God’s glorious and bountiful creation.

We’re so grateful for our time together, and grateful to be home. And impatiently waiting for film scans…
