I met Nate and Evan playing gay kickball and I immediately felt close to them, which is apparently what happens when you put a bunch of q***r people on a kickball field together. So obviously, when they asked me to photograph their engagement session, I was honored. Waking up before the sun with these two was actually magical, though I’m still questioning how we got ourselves there at that hour.

Very cool to get to document my friends and their love, and even cooler to have photos of them before we spend the fall season absolutely obliterating the competition.

By “obliterating,” I mean Nate and I will be having a super fun, cool, chill time and then going to Perfect Rack while Evan moves up in the league and starts making ridiculous catches and kicks that make the rest of us look bad.

Love you boysssss. Love gay kickball. Love this sesh so much. 🫶🏼

After four years, I’m saying goodbye to the house on Margaret Street and starting fresh in a new studio. 🤍

It’s strange trying to sum up what one room can mean to you. These four walls have been the setting for HUNDREDS of shoots. It’s been a comfortable space for so many clients new and old, some of you returning year after year, and countless ideas (some good, some not so good).

A lot of my growing up as an artist happened here. I got to experiment, make weird things, change my mind, try again, meet people who inspired me, and slowly figure out what kind of work I actually want to make. This space gave me the room to do that, and I’ll always be grateful for it.

I think I’m ready to shake things up. I’m moving into the new studio with a lot of curiosity about what I can make there.

So, goodbye Margaret Street, and thank you for being my home away from home for so many years. 🏠💌

I can’t wait to show you guys what’s coming next.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about intimacy. Not romance, necessarily. They’re related, but they aren’t the same thing. Intimacy feels more vast.

Intimacy is letting someone know you. It’s recognizing someone else in a hundred ordinary ways. It’s the accumulation of tiny moments that say, “I see you. I remember you. I know you.”

I think that’s why I’m so inspired by what others may perceive as mundane. I’m always looking for the moments that exist between people, not just the big milestones. I paired some thoughts with some 35mm frames of little moments that immediately made me think of someone else, as we all stretch to allow ourselves to be known in the same way.

🍦 Living the Dream(ette) with Jessi + Kirwinn🍦

One of my favorite things about photographing people in their neighborhood is getting to fold the places that make up their everyday into the story. For these two, that meant walking over to Dreamette in Springfield, ordering soft serve, and spending a slow afternoon in a spot that’s been part of the surrounding neighborhoods for generations.

The ordinary places become landmarks before you realize it. One day it’ll be, “This is where we used to go before you were born.”

I have a feeling they’ll be back here soon, just with one more cone to order. 😭😭😭

The ordinary days deserve remembering too.

Half-finished cups of tea.

Slippered feet sinking into the cozy rug.

One more episode. (Yes, Netflix, we are still watching.)

The sound of someone humming from the other room.

Laundry that never quite gets folded.

Watering the plants.

Stealing a bite while dinner’s still cooking. (We haven’t made this dish in a while.)

Reading side by side without saying much.

The sound of the neighbors pulling into their driveway.

The spot on the couch that’s become yours. (That little stain where you spilled your orange juice.)

Sunlight moving across the bedroom wall.

The furbabies squeezing into the middle.

Inside jokes that don’t make sense to anyone else.

The glint on the mirror we thrifted together in North Carolina.

The home you built without realizing you were building it.

As a photographer, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what happens when a moment is documented, and what happens when it isn’t.

History isn’t just made up of major events. It’s made up of people.

The people who fell in love.
The people who made art.
The people who built families.
The people who found joy despite everything.
For so much of q***r history, those stories were hidden, erased, rewritten, or never recorded at all.

Documenting q***r lives today feels important because it leaves a trail. A record, some evidence. A reminder that we were here then, and are here now.

I often hear “I support you, but you don’t have to be so loud about it”. And every time, I beg to differ. Visibility saves lives. Because every time a q***r person is seen, documented, and remembered, it becomes a little harder to erase us and a little easier for someone else to imagine a future for themselves.
