When I first started photography, I struggled with the feeling that I had to fit my work into one very specific box.

It HAD to be light and airy. Or it HAD to be dark and moody. Or I HAD to use flash at every reception, even when the ambient light was speaking to me.
Because my work leaned toward the “fine art” or “light and airy” style, I felt pressure to present only one kind of image. I’d even feel discouraged when I captured a moment that didn’t fit neatly into that “light and bright” box.

It’s taken me a while, but I’ve learned that I don’t want to limit the way I photograph a wedding just to maintain a certain aesthetic.

Style and consistency will always be important to me. But I’ve realized that my style isn’t defined by one kind of light and there is so much more out there if you don’t let rules define you.

And I’m proud to show the full range of a wedding day. The bright, the dark, the quiet, the dramatic, the imperfect, and everything in between.

Kelly and Ray’s wedding day was such a fun one creatively because it gave me the chance to do exactly that. I think that’s what I love most about wedding photography now: I don’t have to choose one box.

Ambient light, shot digitally in the gorgeous St. Joseph’s Shine, Detroit Michigan. With a low light that Catholic Churches bring, digital cameras are such a great tool.

Oh, Mary Ruth and Colton, what incredible people you two are! Just like your sister, Gladys, said in her maid of honor speech, you are soul mates, brought together by God.

From a visual and design standpoint, everything was stunning and perfect as could be. But beyond that, what inspired us was how deeply you two cherish your Catholic Faith and loved your families and friends. Your witness was what impacted everyone most, even though you had the prettiest flowers and most epic shoes 😉

Happy ( just over ) a year anniversary to Margaret and Lane! 🤍🥹💒

God continues to amaze me with His attention to detail and the way He so beautifully writes the story of our lives. You hear it all the time, but these two are truly a match made only by Our Creator in Heaven.

Being a part of Margaret and Lane’s wedding day and getting to know them both (and also Maddie and Brian, Margaret’s sister and brother-in-law) has been one of the highlights of my photography career. And no, it wasn’t just because their wedding Masses took place at our favorite church in Michigan 😉

Rather, it was the blessing of getting to know and be loved by two of the kindest, most wonderful people we have had the pleasure of meeting. Margaret and Lane, you are truly special souls. 🤍 We look back on your day so fondly.
