The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone — the very landscape that helped make this all possible.

In 1871, artist Thomas Moran joined the Hayden Geological Survey into the Yellowstone region, and his sweeping paintings of this canyon brought its colors and scale to members of Congress who had never seen it firsthand. Moran's work is widely credited with helping persuade lawmakers to establish Yellowstone as the world's first national park in 1872.

Forty-four years later, on August 25, 1916, that idea grew into something larger: the National Park Service, created with the mandate to conserve these lands and provide for their enjoyment "in such manner … as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."

110 years later, standing at this same canyon, it's hard not to feel the weight of that promise — and the debt we owe to a painter who helped a nation see what was worth saving.
