Family session... with a plot twist. 🤫💍
A few weeks before these photos were taken, she reached out to book a family session.

What she didn’t know was that her boyfriend had already contacted me too.
Completely independently.
To plan a surprise proposal.

The best part? Neither of us realized we were talking about the same couple until I showed up for the family session and he immediately recognized me.
From that moment on, we were both trying to act completely normal while sharing a secret she knew nothing about.
Two weeks later, I got to photograph one of the biggest moments of their lives.

Sometimes being a photographer means documenting memories. Sometimes it means helping keep the surprise of a lifetime. 🤍

One of the biggest things that changed my photography wasn’t a new camera, a new lens, or a prettier location.
It was learning to see light.

When I first started, I spent so much time looking for the perfect backdrop. Now, one of the first things I look for is where the light is coming from and what the shadows are doing. Good light can turn an ordinary location into something special. And don’t be afraid of shadows. They add depth, mood, and interest to an image. Sometimes the shadows are just as important as the light itself.

One of my favorite reminders (even for myself) is this: stop worrying so much about your camera settings and start paying more attention to the light. A technically perfect image in boring light will never be as powerful as an image with beautiful light and real emotion.

I could honestly overshare this gallery forever. 🤍
This beautiful wedding in Washington, D.C. had everything I love about micro weddings: an intimate atmosphere, an elegant setting and lots of laughter and happy tears.

One of the reasons I enjoy photographing smaller weddings so much is that they allow space for me to actually be present. There’s time to connect with the couple, get to know their families, and capture the moments that happen naturally throughout the day. The smaller guest count never makes a wedding feel smaller. If anything, it makes the connections feel even bigger.
Days like this are exactly why micro weddings have such a special place in my heart. 🫶🏻

Lately, with the weather being all over the place and the Virginia humidity making its return, I’ve been thinking a lot about in-home sessions.

Which reminded me of this absolutely adorable in-home maternity session.
We spent the morning simply hanging out, talking, laughing, and documenting this exciting season of life in a place that already meant something to them, their home. No worrying about the weather. No sweating through a dress. No rescheduling because of a storm rolling in. Just a relaxed session that felt personal, comfortable, and completely focused on them.

Who says only kids can have fun splashing in the water? 💦
This sweet couple fully embraced the experience and turned what could have been a simple session into an evening full of laughter, movement, and a lot of love.
By the end of it, we were all a little wet, a little sandy, and having way too much fun to care.
In fact, I think I got home with sand between my teeth. 😆 I would say, mission accomplished! Who’s next?

Isn’t this how most of us remember childhood?
Playing in the water until you’re completely soaked. Dirty feet. Wet clothes. Running around without a care in the world. Sessions like these honestly bring back so many memories of my own childhood which is probably why I love family sessions like these with all of my heart.

I don’t expect kids to stay clean, sit still, or smile on command. I’d much rather capture them doing what they do best: playing, exploring, and having fun.
Because when you look back at these photos years from now, you won’t be thinking about perfect outfits or perfect behavior. You’ll remember who your kids were at this age. Their personalities, their energy, and the little things that made them them.
And that’s exactly what I want to document. These are the sessions that make my heart jump!
