September always feels a little like a fresh start, so it seems like a good time to reintroduce myself

I’m Melissa, the photographer behind Melissa McCann Photography. I started my business in 2019 photographing high school seniors and over the years expanded into headshots and personal branding.

When I’m not photographing clients, I’m usually still taking pictures. I create conceptual self-portraits, photograph just about everything when I travel, and our Shih Tzu Daisy is without question my most photographed subject.

A few other things about me: I’m a former tax attorney, mom of four, slightly obsessed with Lilly Pulitzer and Slim Aarons, love to travel, read, shop and take barre classes. I also just dropped my third child off at college, which means we are somehow down to just one at home. I’m still trying to figure out how that happened so quickly!

Photography started as something I loved and has grown into a second career I never could have imagined when I first picked up a camera. I feel incredibly lucky that I get to spend my days photographing people at such exciting times in their lives and careers.

Whether you’re here for senior photos, headshots, personal branding, photography, senior photos, tips, behind-the-scenes peeks—or the occasional appearance by Daisy—I’m so glad you’re here. Thanks for following along!

How many outfits do you really need for a branding session?

I usually recommend 2–4 looks — but they don’t all need to be completely different outfits.

Think about having:

• one polished, professional look
• one more relaxed, everyday look
• one or two looks that show a little more of your personality

And sometimes the smallest changes make a big difference. Add a blazer, lose the jacket, change your earrings or shoes, and suddenly you have a completely different set of images.

The goal isn’t just to have a lot of photos. It’s to create a library of images you can actually use — on your website, LinkedIn, social media and beyond.

This is something we plan together before every branding session, so you don’t have to figure it all out yourself

Time for new team headshots?

Updating your team’s headshots is one of those things that is very easy to keep putting off.

Everyone is busy. Schedules are complicated. And suddenly you realize the photos on your website or LinkedIn profiles are several years old—or your team has changed and the images no longer look cohesive.

That’s why I bring the studio to you.

For office headshot sessions, I set up professional lighting and a backdrop right at your workplace and photograph each member of your team individually. I help everyone with posing and expression (because almost no one walks in saying they love having their headshot taken!) and keep the process moving so there is minimal disruption to the workday.

The result is a collection of polished, consistent images that look like they belong together—while still allowing each person to look like themselves.

I work with medical practices, law firms, financial professionals, real estate teams and other businesses.

If your team’s headshots are due for an update, reach out. I’d be happy to talk about what would work best for your office.

The countdown is on.

In a little over a week, we’ll be moving my son into his college dorm.

Today I packed a few boxes to send ahead, and it suddenly hit me.

He’s my third child to leave for college, so you’d think this would get easier by now. The truth is, it doesn’t.

There’s a constant tug-of-war between excitement and sadness. I couldn’t be happier for him. He worked incredibly hard, he’s heading to his first-choice school, and I know this next chapter is going to be an amazing adventure.

But I’ll miss him.

Everyone tells you this is how it’s supposed to be. They’re right. Watching your children grow into independent adults is the goal. That doesn’t mean parents don’t feel the weight of it when they leave.

Instead of finishing those boxes, I found myself scrolling through his senior gallery. I couldn’t believe how quickly this past year went.

I’m so grateful we took the time to document this season of his life. I’ll be putting together an album that I know I’ll treasure for years to come.

If you have a rising senior, don’t stop at the yearbook photo. Capture who they are right now—their personality, their interests, their smile, the way they look at this moment in life.

Because somehow, senior year goes by in the blink of an eye. And I promise, you’ll never regret having those photographs.

Last week, I had the pleasure of taking professional headshots for participants in the Greenwich Alliance for Education’s Transition to College (T2C) program for first-generation college-bound students. It was such a rewarding evening. These students were wonderful to work with, full of enthusiasm, and excited for what lies ahead. I left feeling grateful to have met them and hopeful for the future.

If you’re a recent Greenwich High School graduate—or even an older alum—the T2C program offers invaluable guidance, mentorship, and resources to help first-generation students successfully navigate the transition to college and beyond.

Client Spotlight:

Kelsey of Kelsey LaVigne

If you have ever been curious about color analysis, Kelsey is the person to know. Through House of Colour North Stamford, she helps clients discover the colors that make them feel more confident, radiant, and like themselves.

For her brand session, we wanted images that felt elevated, joyful, empowering, and true to her. Because color is her expertise, every detail mattered — wardrobe, palette, props, and how her own Autumn coloring showed up in the images.

Together, we created portraits, process images, and client-experience photos that help show what color analysis is really about: confidence, clarity, and seeing yourself in a new way.

And I can now say this from experience — after photographing Kelsey, I became a client myself and had my colors done. I’m a Spring!

In Kelsey’s words:

“Seeing myself — really seeing myself, intentionally lit and styled and in my element — made it real in a way that nothing else had.”

That is what I love about personal brand photography. The right images don’t just show what you do. They help you step into it.

What do all these images have in common?

Why do I take so many photos without showing your face?

Because I want your website designer to LOVE me!😊

Actually I know that these photos are useful to YOU and YOUR business.

Social media posts, newsletters, emails, flyers, and yes your website.

Brand photos are so much more than your average headshot. I’d love to speak with you to explain more.
