More Hydrangeas

Following the Hydrangea post of last week, I went back to the Hydrangea shrubs and found this splendid display of red and pink blooms. Intense red hydrangea blooms are really special. Wikipedia tells me: "Unlike blue hydrangeas (which thrive in acidic soil), red hydrangeas require neutral to slightly alkaline soil to maintain their rich red hue." This seems like the perfect location for these shrubs. Again, from Wikipedia: "They perform best with morning sun and afternoon shade..."

"Light and Shadow" is the name of a gallery of black-and-white images. Light and Shadow is also the title of an upcoming book of black-and-white images. Peony Petals I shot this image about 15 years ago in studio conditions. In color, the photograph was interesting, but it lacked something, and so it has languished in my back catalogue. Hydrangeas & Daylilies

I love Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla). All too often these days, I find older shrubs growing in what has become poor soil, and colors appear washed out. The plants start blooming in late spring but the heat of summer also tends to wash out the blooms. When I saw these hydrangeas, I was immediately drawn to the lovely blooms. The daylilies (Hemerocallis) in front were a nice counterpoint, so I snapped this picture of all the flowers against the wall.
