I’ve been flying drones for 11 years but last week when I captured this was the first time I’ve had a run in with law enforcement while flying.
Story time! While flying from Ah-Nab-Awen park and getting shots of the under construction soccer stadium and downtown, a GRPD cruiser pulled up to me and the two officers told me I needed to land immediately. I complied but was also really confused. This area is open to fly drones in and I was only flying over the river, the park, or the Ford Museum Parking lot while also keeping an eye on an ADS-B site to see if any helicopters were in the area to land on one of the helipads in the area.
I landed and was told that Secret Service contacted GRPD with my location (found through my Remote ID signal) and told them to notify me to land immediately before the “make my drone crash into the river.” Now I’m even more confused as I had no idea why the Secret Service would be in the area along with there being no Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR).
The officers told me Bush Jr and Bill Clinton were speaking at an event directly across the river that evening which was the reason for the SS presence. They also said they are doing anti drone enforcement before even enacting a TFR. I later realized that Bush and Clinton are private citizens and, as far as I know, a TFR is not able to be enacted for them. I’m not sure if the GRPD officers were making up the bit about taking out drones or if that’s something the SS really told them.
I was also told about the DHS building downtown, which, in my own error, did not know was there. It’s one of the federal building types that a drone can’t be flown within 3000 feet of. Then, after checking, the officers told me I was actually not in violation of.
Thankfully, the interaction ended without incident and the officers were very courteous and understanding of when I asked for clarification on some of the issues.
