I loved getting to photograph my friends during such a special season of their lives✨

About the photos: these were taken in early November last year at Manassas Battlefield, with the sun at an elevation of just 6°.

I’ve been really enjoying figuring out the specific light and sun elevation I’m drawn to when photographing outdoors. Learning to recognize how different types of light create different moods and feelings in your photos is such an important part of developing your style as a photographer. I highly recommend using an app to track the sun’s elevation (or simply finding a way to keep an eye on it) when you shoot! It’s a great way to learn what kind of light you love and find it again, even as the seasons change.

I photographed this family back in June, and I remember being a little worried that my lens wouldn’t be fast enough for an indoor session, especially when working with natural light (at the time I was using my Sony 24-105 f4). I wanted to make sure I could capture bright images without compromising their quality, so a friend kindly lent me her Tamron 35-150mm f/2–2.8, and I ended up loving it! It was such a fun lens to work with! At this moment I appreciate having the flexibility of being able to zoom in and out, but I’m also becoming really interested in having a wider aperture with a prime lens, I might have to give it a try sometime!

I shot these photos in the beginning of September this year right during the golden hour. I like keeping track of the sun’s elevation when I take photos so I have a reference for future sessions and to understand what type of light I like more. Sharing it here in case it’s helpful, these particular photos were taken with the sun at an elevation between 8° and 4°in the evening☀️
