Some stories begin in the shadows. Others begin the moment an animal finally finds safety. 🧡
Zucari, an African serval, was born on July 2, 2015. His early life remains largely unknown, but what is known paints a picture no wild cat should ever experience.
In 2017, the Ohio Department of Agriculture learned about a breeding facility that was illegally possessing exotic small wildcats. Because so little information was shared with the Department, Zucari's full story may never be known. They suspect he lived with up to 15 other cats in hopes of continuing to create exotic hybrid wildcat species.
When officials found Zucari, he was living in a basement with limited light and outside access. Of those 15 cats, an accredited sanctuary in Florida rescued Zucari and two caracals, giving him the chance for a better future.
That journey continued in early 2023, when Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) agreed to provide lifelong homes for 33 wild cats from the Florida sanctuary, which is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). On December 29, 2023, Zucari arrived at the Refuge and now calls Freedom Field his forever home.
Today, Zucari's personality shines through in the quiet moments. He's a wonderful blend of cautious curiosity and gentle mischief. During the day, you'll often find him tucked away in the cool comfort of his favorite shaded grassy hideaway, where his beautiful coat helps him disappear into the landscape. As evening approaches, his playful side emerges. He enjoys quietly stalking the staff and interns from a respectful distance, always watching with curious eyes.
Zucari also enjoys keeping up with his neighbors, often sitting across from them in his habitat. Every now and then, he'll cautiously make his way over to the animal care staff or interns for a tentative sniff before deciding he's gathered enough information for the day.
Every rescued resident carries their past differently. For Zucari, healing has meant finding a place where he can be exactly who he is—curious, cautious, playful, and forever safe.
