Today's is "Bending Blooms"

Springtime is a time of renewal and new growth. Here we have an arching branch full of new blooms which my apps tell me is a Bird Cherry tree. Aren't the blooms so beautiful? What a welcome sight after our winter sleep.

I found this wonderful sight while wandering through Reinstein Woods back in May on one of my evening walks. Sun still shining, cooling down and birds singing all around. Beautiful place to slow down, wind down and take in all the beauty around! Always feel refreshed and rejuvenated internally after a wandering walk through here! Nature has a way of pulling all the stress and anxiety out and taking it away... soul soothing!

These beautiful arches of delicate flowers... how can you not smile when you are surrounded by them?

Bird Cherry Fun Facts

-Flowering plant in the rose family.

-Robins, starlings, and thrushes eat the early summer cherries and help scatter the seeds.

-Small glands at the base of each leaf make a sweet nectar that attracts ants. The ants protect the tree by chasing away leaf-eating bugs.

-The white flower clusters open in April or May to supply hungry bees and flies with early pollen and nectar.

-Caterpillars of the brimstone and orchard ermine moths love to munch on the green leaves.

-Humans find the small black fruits very bitter and astringent, though they are only mildly toxic if eaten in large amounts.

-In some old Scottish folklore, people placed bird cherry bark by their doors to keep away plagues, or viewed the tree with superstition.

-The dark bark contains tannins that people historically used to dye textiles earthy brown and yellow shades.

Today's photo is "What Are You Eating Little One?"

One of my evening walks at Reinstein Woods. The sun was still filtering through the trees, the birds were singing and chattering their end of greetings, a slight breeze through the trees causing rustling and me... trying to walk quietly to not disturb any of the wildlife I may be close to encountering! 😏

Always fun when walking the trails, you never know who you will meet! Isn't this little one so adorable? Just sitting, minding its own business, eating something πŸ€” not sure if nut, leaf, piece of something... who knows πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ but it's still adorable! Didn't stay long to visit! We had our moment... it didn't take off right away... but didn't stay for a full photo shoot either 🀣

I love encounters like these... so spontaneous... never know who will see or how they will respond... but to share the brief moment... fun, captivating and wonderful!

Eastern Chipmunk Fun Facts

-The eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) is a small, energetic rodent native to North America.

-Measuring 5 to 6 inches long (plus a 3-to-4-inch tail) and weighing only 1 to 5 ounces

-These busy omnivores are actually classified as ground-dwelling squirrels.

-Cheek expansion: Their cheek pouches can stretch to three times the size of their head, allowing them to pack up to 70 acorns at a time.

-One eastern chipmunk can gather as many as 165 acorns in a single day.

-Hoarding capacity: They store tens of thousands of food items in underground caches to last through the winter.
-----(See, hoarding can be beneficial!! 🀭🀣)

-Their burrows can feature tunnels up to 30 feet long.

-Burrows include separate, clean chambers specifically for sleeping, raising young (nurseries), and storing food.

-When digging burrows, they carry the excavated dirt away in their cheek pouches to hide the entrance from predators.

-They use distinct soundsβ€”"chucks" to warn of aerial predators like hawks, and high-pitched "chips" for ground threats.

-They can run up to 20 to 21 mph when sprinting away from danger, or freeze completely still for hours to avoid detection.

-Their distinct facial and back stripes help break up their silhouette against forest twigs and leaf litter.

Today's photo is "What A Nice Day"

This was back in the spring on a walk at Reinstein Woods. When I go toward evening time the birds are more visible instead of just being heard and darting through the tree canopies. They come down and land on lower branches, the ground, shrubs... easier for me to enjoy and capture.

Was evening but still sunlit and warm. Slight breeze rustling through the trees on the trails. The birds chattering and singing and flying around. A fun time to visit. This gray catbird looks like it is looking around, assessing and determining "what a nice day"

It is looking at me and I love that connection! When for a moment everything else falls away and it is just that connection! Telling me what a nice day it was in that simple moment. And what a nice day it was for me!! I love when I do not startle them and they trust me to stay for a moment, it is so wonderful!πŸ’œ

Gray Catbird Fun Facts

-The gray catbird, also spelled grey catbird, is a medium-sized North American and Central American perching bird of the mimid family.

-It is the only member of the "catbird" genus Dumetella.

-In some areas it is known as the slate-colored mockingbird.

-Male and female are identical -identical slate-gray feathers, black caps, and rufous undertail coverts.

-Females tend to average fractionally larger or heavier in select measurements, but overlap makes visual sizing unreliable in the field.

-Males sing loud, long, complex songs to claim territory. Females rarely sing, and if they do, it is much softer.

-Males chase females, bow, droop their wings, raise their tails, and turn away to highlight their rusty undertail patch.

-Females primarily build the bulky, cup-shaped nest out of twigs and leaves, while males help minimally by gathering some materials.

Today's is "Take A Rest And Enjoy"

This beautiful scene goes back to May at Tifft Nature Preserve
Even tho it was May in WNY, it was quite a warm day! The sun was shining on all the springtime greenery! There was a gentle breeze blowing to keep the air moving, rustling the leaves and grasses. All the trees were filling out their leaves.

Wandering the trails there were birds singing in the treetops and of course I was following the sounds and enjoying the beautiful sights! 😊

I came upon this beautiful scene... I love the way the trees come together and create the arch above the bench. It had a sort of enchanted feel... a special feel... nestled in there.... yet... it was right alongside the path! What a lovely spot it was to stop and have a drink of water.

I love how you can wander and always find something new... a new perspective... something to make you smile! The wonders and soothing effects of nature are amazing and wonderful to enjoy... and they are all around! I love the area I am in for all the seasons and the variety of nature experiences that are close to me! I don't have to go to exotic places, just stop and look around, it is beautiful! I love capturing and celebrating nature's beauty!

Tifft Nature Preserve Fun Facts

-Tifft Nature Preserve is a 264-acre nature refuge dedicated to conservation and environmental education.

-Five miles of trails and boardwalks for visitors to enjoy

-Three boardwalks with viewing blinds in and adjacent to the cattail marsh

-Designated National Audubon Society β€œImportant Bird Area” offers local birding hotspot

-Fishing at Lake Kirsty only (except North Shoreline)

-Snowshoe rentals and cross-country skiing is permitted

-Opportunities to observe local wildlife in natural habitats

-The Preserve was created in 1972 from land purchased by the City of Buffalo for a landfill site.

-Concerned citizens recognized the ecological importance of the site and convinced the city legislators to plan for the area’s preservation.

-The completed landfill incorporated many safety measures, allowing the land to have a new purpose, a nature preserve which opened in 1976.

-The land that comprises Tifft Nature Preserve has a fascinating history. It was once part of a huge dairy farm owned by George Washington Tifft and later became a transshipment center, primarily for coal and iron ore.

-During the 1950s and 1960s, Tifft’s land was a dumpsite for city refuse.

-Tifft began its transformation to a nature preserve in the 1970s.

-Nearly two million cubic feet of solid municipal waste was enclosed in clay and covered with soil excavated from another section of the Preserve.

-Ponds were enlarged, and trees and wildflowers were planted.

-Conservation of Tifft’s large cattail marsh helped attract a variety of animals.

-In 1982, Tifft Farm Nature Preserve became a department of the Buffalo Museum of Science. Its name was later changed to Tifft Nature Preserve, to better reflect its purpose as a preserve rather than a farm.

-Today, Tifft Nature Preserve maintains a natural setting. Animals from the entire region take advantage of its ponds, marshes and woodlands. It has become the urban sanctuary many people envisioned more than 20 years ago.

-The Herb and Jane Darling Education Center provides amenities including educational displays, restrooms and indoor programming and event space.

Today's is "S-T-R-E-T-C-H!"

It's Monday morning and how do you feel? For me it is a needing to stretch kind of morning 🀣 So I thought this cute painted turtle captured that feeling well! Doesn't it look like it is stretching?

This was at Tifft Nature Preserve in June. That was a sunny and hot day. You can see the sun on its shell, log and the water.
There was a nice little breeze to make it not too hot. All the sounds... the rustling grasses and leaves, the birds in the distance chattering and singing. The smells of summer and sunshine! All the things to make you lose time and all the stress and worries of the day!

Always fun exploring because you never know what you will find, but there is always something to find!

Nature's beauty is everywhere, just have to take a moment to enjoy it!

I love getting lost in nature, it is so soul soothing and freeing!

Capturing some of the beauty is my happy place and being able to share it is so wonderful and special!

Thank you all for being here on this journey with me πŸ’œ

Painted Turtle Fun Facts
-During winter, they hibernate at the bottom of ponds. They can go up to five months without taking a breath, surviving by absorbing oxygen through their skin and enduring high levels of lactic acid.
-Like many turtles, the s*x of painted turtle hatchlings depends on the nest's temperature. Warmer temperatures produce females, while cooler temperatures yield males.
-Painted turtles lack tongues that move freely, meaning they must be in the water to eat, using the water to help them swallow their food.
-Their bodies can tolerate freezing weather! They have special substances in their blood similar to antifreeze that prevent their tissues from freezing solid.
-They love to sunbathe to raise their body temperature and rid themselves of leeches. More than 50 turtles have been seen stacked on top of each other on a single log

Today's is "Garlic Mustard"

Today's flashback goes back to May wandering along the creek at Akron Falls Park.

Bright sunny day, breeze through the trees, birds chirping and the water gently flowing. There were taller grasses and flowers at the edge of the creek that were calling to me... so of course I listened and went to explore! I came upon this garlic mustard leaning out over the water. Playing around with different angles and setting and look what I got...isn't this just gorgeous?

The bright white flowers, the shadows on the leaves, one little strand of a spider web ... so beautiful to me!

Garlic Mustard Fun Facts

-Settlers intentionally planted it in North America as a garden herb and medicinal remedy in the 1800s.

-It is now one of the worst invaders of forests in the American Northeast and is highly destructive.

-Crushed leaves smell like garlic, roots taste like horseradish, and eating it helps remove an invasive threat!

-Pottery shards from 4000 BCE show it was used as a seasoning in prehistoric Europe.

-It contains three to four times the vitamin C of an orange.

-It grows low round leaves in year one, then shoots up a 3-foot flowering stem with white four-petal flowers in year two before dying.

-It uses allelopathy, releasing toxins into the soil that block helpful fungi and stunt native tree and plant growth

- White-tailed deer love to graze on native wildflowers, but they hate the taste of garlic mustard, helping the invasive plant take over unchecked

-A severe biennial w**d that produces anywhere from 350 to nearly 8,000 seeds per single mature plant, with dense patches capable of generating up to 12,500 seeds per square yard to fuel rapid environmental invasion

-Plants bolt and flower in their second spring, producing tiny four-petaled white flowers that develop into slender, upright seed pods called siliques

-Each pod contains a single row of oblong, dark brown or black seeds

-Seeds mature and scatter from mid-summer (July through August), mostly dropping within a few feet of the parent plant, though wildlife, water, and human activity (like boots or lawn mowers) can carry them further

-Seeds can remain viable in the soil for up to 5 to 10 years, making long-term control challenging

-Seeds typically need a cold winter period to break dormancy before sprouting in the early spring

-Pulled plants left on the ground can still successfully mature and drop viable seeds even after being uprooted

***so apparently after I took the photos I should've very carefully pulled the plant out! 🫣 Why do invasive plants have to be so pretty? 😒

Trying to include more native plants/flowers at home and for non-native, avoid the ones that are invasive/detrimental. How about you? Do you think about invasiveness and being detrimental to native plants and wildlife when adding plants/flowers to your yard? Or do you simply add what catches your eye and makes you smile?

Today's "Wandering Among The Beauty"

This was taken a couple years back at Tifft Nature Preserve
It was a bright, sunny and hot day. A wonderful time to explore below the tree canopy. A light breeze circulating the air, rustling the leaves and causing the sunlight and shadows to shift, dance and play!

Look at all the light and shadows, aren't they wonderful? I love how the light filters through the leaves and creates beautiful shadows... the vibrancy and the ever changing play of light and shadows! The pull of the path calling to me and drawing my in to go explore!

I enjoy visiting and exploring at different times as every time is a new trip... never know what you will find! Always something to see and enjoy ... ever changing magic and wonder!

Who is drawn to paths? πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
Who enjoys exploring woodland paths? πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
Do walks among the trees clear your mind of stresses?
Who likes watching the shapes and patterns... the play of the sunlight through the trees and leaves? πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Enjoy your adventures and explorations! Remember to slow down, look around... what do you see? what do you hear? what do you smell? what can you touch? Being IN the moment ... clears the mind and soothes the soul! πŸ’œ
