With Cargo holds as empty as the Piers, the Federal Churchill departs Duluth
The Federal Churchill ending their 1st visit of the season to Duluth.
They arrived June 29 at 19:16 in the evening with it's holds full of cement powder for the Ash Grove terminal in Duluth. They sailed up river to the Ash Grove dock, arriving at 19:58 after a 42 minute sail from the Aerial Lift Bridge to the Tie up at the dock. For the next 206.4 hours, 8.6 days, they discharged the cement. A tedious undertaking at best.
July 8 at 10:50 in the morning they departed the Ash Grove dock, heading to the Aerial Lift Bridge to depart. AT 10:50 they sailed out of the Twin Ports heading to Thunder Bay ON to load coal at Thunder Bay Terminals for Montreal.

early evening with a cargo of heavy machinery from

They arrived at the Port Terminal dock with tug assist
from the G-Tug Missouri at 20:04. The Singapore spent

Lots of Sisters for this type of ship!
The BBC Singapore sailing out of Duluth, ending their 1st visit of the season to a pretty non existent attendance. They arrived Duluth July 5 at 19:30 in the early evening with a cargo of heavy machinery from India to be discharged at the Port Terminal Berth # 8,9. (1,290 MT)
They arrived at the Port Terminal dock with tug assist from the G-Tug Missouri at 20:04. The Singapore spent the next 58.3 hours at the dock, finishing up and departing July 08 at 06:21 in the morning. Sailing under the Aerial lift bridge at 06:43 making their total stay in Port 59.2 hours. They are heading to Valleyfield CA.

Info on the M/V Honorable James L. Oberstar from the Interlake Steamship page:
Steamer Charles M. Beeghly joined The Interlake Steamship Company fleet in 1967. When built in 1959 by American Ship Building Company at Toledo, Ohio, as Shenango II, she was one of the largest vessels (710 feet long) on the Great Lakes. In 1972, the Beeghly was lengthened by 96 feet at Fraser Shipyards, Inc., Superior, Wisconsin. She was converted to a self-unloader at Fraser Shipyards in 1981 and is capable of discharging cargo at a rate of 6000 tons per hour. Her steam turbine power plant was replaced with two Bergen B:32:40L diesels during the 2008-2009 winter layup period. She returned to service in June 2009. The Beeghly was named for a former president and chairman of the board of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation. In 2010 the M/V Charles M Beeghly was renamed the M/V Hon. James L. Oberstar honoring the former congressman of the same name from Minnesota who served the US House of Representatives for nearly a half century.
Interesting Facts
In 2003, the crew of the BEEGHLY were awarded a special 4-year Chamber of Shipping of America's Jones F. Devlin Award for 1,398 consecutive days without a lost-time accident.
Oberstar, the ship's namesake, earned a reputation as Congress’ primary expert on transportation issues. Few legislators have made more contributions to Great Lakes shipping and the U.S. Maritime Industry.

This turned into a Twofer! The Mesabi Miner and the Federal Seto departing Duluth MN this Monday early evening. The Miner is Heading to Toledo with the ore they loaded at CN. The Federal Seto is heading to Thunder Bay.

The Mesabi Miner arrived Duluth MN for their 6th visit
of the season June 30 at 18:18 in the evening hours.
Heading up river to the CN dock to load iron ore pellets

A nice end of light departure for the Mesabi Miner
The Mesabi Miner arrived Duluth MN for their 6th visit of the season June 30 at 18:18 in the evening hours. Heading up river to the CN dock to load iron ore pellets for Cleveland OH. They pulled into the CN dock at 19:51, stayed there loading until July 1 at 20:45, 24.9 hours. They left the CN dock, sailed down river to the Aerial Lift Bridge, departed Duluth at 21:45, thus ending this visit at 27.5 hours in Port.
This was their 6th visit to Duluth, their 13th trip of the season to Lake Superior. Other docks they've loaded at are BN-5, Two Harbor and Silver Bay.

Info on the miner from LSMMA:

The MESABI MINER was built in 1977 by the American Shipbuilding Company in Lorain, Ohio. She measures 1,004 feet in length, 105 feet in width, and 50 feet in depth. She is powered by two 8,000hp 16-cylinder Pielstick diesel engines which give her a top speed of 15 knots, or about 17mph. She is also equipped with a 1,500hp bow thruster to aid her maneuverability in port. The MESABI MINER has 36 hatches on her deck which open into 7 cargo holds located below deck; each hatch covering measures 65 by 11 feet. She has a maximum carrying capacity of 63,300 tons. Above her deck is a 265 foot self-unloading boom which allows her to unload her own cargo at a rate of 10,000 tons per hour for coal without the aid of shore side equipment. The MESABI MINER is currently owned and operated by the Interlake Steamship Company of Middleburg Heights, Ohio. The MESABI MINER was built for $45.1 million in three sections. The bow and stern sections were built in American Shipbuilding’s Lorain yard; the mid-section, built in their Toledo yard, was later towed to Lorain to be conjoined with the other two sections. She made her maiden voyage to the Twin Ports in June of 1977 and was formally christened here in Duluth in honor of the people of the Mesabi Iron Range. She was the first 1000-footer to load iron ore pellets at Burlington Northern’s Ore Dock Number 5 here in Superior (1977). The historic Interlake Steamship Company was founded in 1913 by the massive mining and steel producing Pickands Mather & Company, which began operating ships in 1883. The fleet was sold into private hands in 1987 and currently operates 9 ships and 1 integrated tug-barge unit on the Great Lakes.
