Twofer! Mesabi Miner departing along with
the Federal Seto! Missouri executes a Pilot Exchange
in the Lake!
Starting off this dissertation with the departure of the
Mesabi Miner!
The Miner began this visit arriving Duluth for their 8th
visit of the season August 31 at 3:52 in the morning, or
late night, however you want to associate the time with.
They sailed up river to the CN dock, arriving there at 5
:33 and began loading their cargo of Iron Ore Pellets
for Toledo OH. Go Mudhens! It was a quick load, 11
hours on the dot they finished loading and departed the
CN dock, sailing back down river to depart Duluth.
They sailed under the Aerial Lift Bridge at 17:35
capping off this short visit at 13.7 hours!
Following closely behind the Miner is the Federal Seto,
departing light after discharging cargo at Port Terminal.
The Federal Seto began their adventure arriving
Duluth for the 1st visit of the season September 27 at
19:34 in the early evening. Arriving with about 1,722
MT of structural steel from The UK. They arrived at
Port Terminal at 20:14 and got to work on discharging
that structural steel. August 31 at 17:25, 93.2 hours
later, they finished the discharge and departed the Port
Terminal docks, heading toward the bridge to depart
Duluth. At 17:57 they did just that, departed Duluth
after being in Port for 94.4 hours, heading to Thunder
Bay ON to load wheat at the Cargill Grain Terminal for
Immingham Great Britain.

Testing the Rain Gear! The Coe Louisa coming to Duluth this rainy Tuesday morning with little fanfare! As long as the camera lens was pointed away from the wind, you can get a spot free picture....
Arriving with containerized cargo and project cargo from Antwerp, Belgium at Port Terminal #8 or #9. They previously delivered cargo from Belgium and Finland to Cleveland, Ohio; Toledo, Ohio; and Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Paul R Tregurtha heading out of Duluth loaded with Iron Ore Pellets for Cleveland OH. A short stay indeed on this visit, 12 hours at the CN dock, 14.2 hours in Port! This was their 18th visit to Duluth this season. 17 of them to load ore, 1 visit for service.

Missouri doing a Pilot for the foggy arrival of the Polsteam Dabie!
First time I've seen this beauty! The Portugal flagged Polsteam Dabie arriving Duluth MN August 31 at 08:06 in the foggy Duluth morning. Arriving to load Wheat at the Riverland Ag dock on the other side of the Aerial Bridge. Tug Missouri was acting as the pilot boat delivering a pilot out to the ship, shown at the beginning of the video. There is no pilot boat working the Duluth Harbor anymore so the Tugs pick up the work now. The Dabie arrived at the Riverland dock at 08:43 and began loading. For the next 62 hours they sat at Riverland, finishing up and departing September 02 at 22:45 in the evening. They sailed out of Duluth to little fanfare at 23:08 heading to Gibraltar to deliver the wheat.

The Last thousand-footer arriving for Coal from SMET!
American Century arrived in Duluth on their 10th
visit of the season, arriving August 28 at 19:23 in the
early evening to load coal at the SMET dock for St
Clair/Monroe MI Power Plants. Supposedly the last coal
out of SMET, with the exception there is a rumor some
ships will be coming to take the remaining coal on site
to Montreal for transfer overseas? They arrived at the
SMET dock at 20:24 and stayed there loading coal until
Augusts 29 at 14:09, 17.8 hour,. The Century departed
SMET, sailed down river and departed Duluth with the
last load of coal at 15:02. Total time in Port for this visit
was 19.6 hours.

American Century arrived Duluth on their 10th visit of the season, arriving August 28 at 19:23 in the early evening to load coal at the SMET dock for St Clair/Monroe MI Power Plants. Supposedly the last coal out of SMET, with the exception there is a rumor some ships will be coming to take the remaining coal on site to Montreal for transfer overseas? They arrived at the SMET dock at 20:24 and stayed there loading coal until Augusts 29 at 14:09, 17.8 hour,. The Century departed SMET, sailed down river and departed Duluth with the last load of coal at 15:02. Total time in Port for this visit was 19.6 hours.

Info on the ship from LSMMA:
The AMERICAN CENTURY was built as the Columbia Star in 1981 by the Bay Shipbuilding Company of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. She measures 1000 feet in length, 105 feet in width, and 56 feet in depth. She is powered by four 3,500hp 20-cylinder General Motors diesel engines which give her a top speed of 14 knots, or about 16mph. She is also equipped with 1,500hp bow and stern thrusters to aid her maneuverability in port. The AMERICAN CENTURY has 37 hatches on her deck which open into 7 cargo holds located below deck. She has a maximum carrying capacity of 78,900 tons. Above her deck is a 250 foot self-unloading boom which allows her to unload her own cargo at a rate of 10,000 tons per hour without the aid of shore side equipment. The AMERICAN CENTURY is owned and operated by the American Steamship Company of Williamsville, New York. The American Steamship Company is one of the largest American fleets on the Great Lakes. The Company has a long history going back to its founding in Buffalo, New York in 1907; they currently operate six 1000-foot vessels on the lakes. The AMERICAN CENTURY was bought, along with five other Oglebay Norton ships, in 2006 by the American Steamship Company for $120 million. Originally named in honor of the brig Columbia, the first vessel to move iron ore through the Soo Locks in 1855, she made her maiden voyage from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin to Silver Bay, Minnesota in May of 1981 to load iron ore pellets. She carried a record cargo of 70,903 tons of Western coal through the Soo Locks in 1997. Only hauling iron ore pellets or western coal, she is one of thirteen 1000-foot vessels that currently operate on the Great Lakes.

The James R Barker sailing into Superior WI this Sunday afternoon This is their 5th arrival to load Iron Ore Pellets at BN-5 for the season. This load or ore will be going to Nanticoke ON. I believe this will be their 1st visit to Nanticoke!

that structural steel. August 31 at 17:25, 93.2 hours
later, they finished the discharge and departed the Port

Duluth. At 17:57 they did just that, departed Duluth
after being in Port for 94.4 hours, heading to Thunder
