This morning, under the final light of golden hour, the SS Wilfred Sykes lifted anchor and made its way over to Fraser Shipyards for repairs. Here, the 1950-built vessel passes beneath a section of the Blatnik Bridge as it entered the shipyard in Superior, Wisconsin.

Night lights:

A light haze lingered over in harbor following a passing thunderstorm as the MV Paul R. Tregurtha prepared to load iron ore at the CN ore dock last night. With its unloading boom extended outward, the largest vessel on the Great Lakes made for another great late-night ship to catch.

After the storm:

An isolated thunderstorm with moderate rain swept through the area last night. Afterwards, I headed out to photograph the MV BBC Genoa sitting in a light haze along at port terminal. Between its paint scheme and the glow of its lights onboard, the Genoa looked especially impressive all lit up.

Passenger vessel Victory II tying up along the seawall near the “Heart Duluth” sign this morning following its arrival into the Port of Duluth. The early morning rain left the boardwalk reflective, giving the waterfront a fresh, post-rain feel.

Yesterday evening, the weekly sailboat race took place just outside the canal. Clouds eventually moved in and took over the sky, but the distinctive red roof of the South Pier Lighthouse brought the color.

Light for White:

There was a break in the clouds this morning just in time to welcome the MV H. Lee White into port. The White arrived carrying dolomite to unload before later transitioning over to load wheat ahead of its departure. Meanwhile, the Victory II had docked behind the DECC alongside the newly constructed seawall.

Interlake takeover:

Continuing this morning’s ship spotting, I headed over to the CN ore dock where two Interlake Steamship Company thousand-footers were tied up. The MV Mesabi Miner continued loading iron ore while the MV Paul R. Tregurtha appeared to be taking a short layover as it waited for the Miner to finish its load.

With the arrival of the PV Victory II this morning, Duluth’s cruise ship season has officially begun. Morning showers moved through just ahead of the ship’s arrival, and hopefully those onboard are getting out early, as thunderstorms are expected to move into the region later this afternoon.
