Calm conditions:

The air was calm and still this afternoon after the heavy fog finally lifted. The MV Mesabi Miner was the first to depart, followed by the MV Federal Seto, which can be seen in the distance making its way out of the Port Terminal.

Two on the way out:

This afternoon, the fog finally lifted, and both the MV Mesabi Miner and MV Federal Seto made their departures under a single lift of the bridge. Here, the Mesabi Miner passes the Federal Seto as the saltie prepares to depart the Port Terminal with assistance from Gtug Missouri. The Miner was loaded with iron ore bound for Toledo, Ohio, while the Seto departed empty for Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Red boats only:

Captain Terry Heyns is back, and with another set of amazing salutes. This evening, the MV Federal Seto arrived carrying steel products that were loaded in Bremen, Germany, and Antwerp, Belgium back in July.

After making several stops throughout the Great Lakes, the Federal Seto will continue on to Thunder Bay, Ontario, before crossing the Atlantic again, this time bound for the United Kingdom. Gtug Missouri was, of course, out to assist the saltie into the Port Terminal.

A call for iron ore brought the MV Walter J. McCarthy Jr. into port this afternoon. A perfectly timed opening in the clouds illuminated the canal just as the thousand-footer made its way through the Duluth Ship Canal.

Mornings are better when they start with a ship. The MV Heemskerkgracht departed last night with a load of wheat bound overseas. Here, the saltie catches a beautiful sunrise while still at the Port Terminal, where it was unloading cargo containers.

Today's arrival:

The only scheduled vessel for today has arrived. The MV John J. Boland brought in a cargo of limestone to unload. Upon entering the harbor, the Boland passed by the MV Heemskerkgracht, which is currently loading wheat at the Bartlett Terminal. USCGC Spar is another vessel which can also be seen in this photo across the harbor.
