FAQ’s that don’t actually matter:
• What kind of equipment do you use? (The professional kind.)
• What’s your photography style? (Depends on the light.)
• Have you shot at our venue before? (A pro will scope things out beforehand and quickly know how to identify the best spots for portraits.)

FAQ’s that matter a LOT:
• How do you ensure our photos are safe? (Dual card slots should be recording simultaneously. Photos should be kept in two different places and stored safely until uploaded and delivered, including for destination weddings. I never leave all cards in a car in case of theft.)
• Can we see a full gallery? (Some photogs have a lot of good work to share but aren’t as confident in low light or less attractive getting ready spaces. And be leery of only pretty photos from styled shoots.)
• Can we hop on a FaceTime call or meet in person? (You absolutely must gel with your photographer’s personality and energy. This is equally as important as their work.)
• Do you have reviews we can read? (You betcha.)

Those four Q’s should be pretty foolproof in ensuring a good experience. 🥂

Last Saturday’s wedding in Des Moines with Jadyn & Peyton was so much fun. 🥲 They’re grounded and kind and their families blew me away. I love love love getting to know my clients better through their families on their wedding day, and their parents did a lot of bragging about these two. I’m thrilled for them and it was such an honor to witness it all.

I couldn’t get over this angel. He was screaming when I arrived and got fussy at the end, but was completely and utterly chilled for the whole session. These first weeks of parenthood are such a messy blur. I love helping parents see how beautiful it was too.

How I adore a chance to slow down with a family. I’ve had the honor of documenting the Coenens since their oldest, Charlotte, was a baby. Both girls are beautifully spirited and strong. When given the chance to move at their pace and take time to play and warm up with them, it was such a successful session.

So many kids aren’t ready to have a near stranger’s camera in their face. But they are ready for playful focused attention. The camera can become part of that. We had a blast on a gorgeous May evening and I loved seeing them relax and laugh together. So happy to have created these photos with them. ✨

I didn’t understand how wrong I was about the importance of wedding coordinators until these things happened…

Years ago, I would confirm couples’ decisions to skip the wedding coordinator to save money, particularly for small weddings. You can DIY it. Easy peasy. I was very wrong. 🫠

I’ve seen SO MANY brides sitting in the makeup chair being lobbed question after question, even though they were sure they’d delegated everything already. The stress and frustration is evident when they want to be relaxing and getting pampered.

There have been several weddings where the bridal parties asked my 2nd shooter when they were supposed to walk down the aisle. No one was there to cue them and they were clueless. Another wedding, the doors closed before the bride was going to enter. She was expecting a song change. She waited an awkwardly long time, while the groom and everyone else thought she’d gotten cold feet. Finally it became clear the music wasn’t changing and she needed to just go for it. It made a special moment feel uncomfortable and embarrassing.

At one small wedding, I was photographing details nearby when the groom started walking his mother down the aisle earlier than planned. No one made sure I knew the processional was starting. I barely made it to the front to snap the photo. Same thing happened at another wedding during the reception when the couple started cutting the cake and I wasn’t even in the room.

At another wedding, I spent twenty minutes trying to usher the hundreds of guests to line up for the church exit because no one knew where to go or what to do.

No matter the size of the wedding, coordinators are invaluable. There are hundreds of moments something needs to be set up, torn down, shuffled around, pinned on, cleaned up, checked on, and adjusted. Having someone there whose sole job is to manage all of the moving parts means your photographer can focus on the photos, and the bride (we all know the groom is chilling 😂) can stay in the moment, enjoying the party, rather than making sure everyone else is enjoying it.

Whether you want full service design and planning or simply a day-of coordinator, it’s worth it. I promise. 🤍

“Why would you have a wedding when you could put a down payment on a house with that money?”

Because you can’t put a price on having everyone you love in one place for a whole day. You can’t put a price on your grandfather getting down on the dance floor. You can’t put a price on those overwhelming feelings of giddiness and joy. The house will come eventually. But all of your loved ones won’t be around forever. We all know how fleeting life is. Spend the money. Throw the party. Hug, and cry, and laugh your way through it. Those memories captured will outweigh anything else you could have possibly purchased. 🥂
