The first time Lauren shaved her head, she walked into her closet, did it alone, and walked back out.

The second time, she had her family.

This time — the third — she invited witnesses.

Her husband Clifton came to do the shaving. A circle of women from her faith community came to pray. That afternoon, in my studio, she let the wall down on purpose and let us all be there for it.

Clifton started with clippers. Lauren asked him to leave a mohawk first — she said it was the coolest she’d ever been. We laughed. She laughed. The mood lifted for a minute the way it does when someone you love makes a joke in the middle of something hard.

Then he kept going.

She held her own hair in her lap. She closed her eyes and put her palms on her scalp and met herself without it. Nobody filled the silence.
What I witnessed wasn’t someone losing something. It was someone choosing not to lose it alone.

There's something special about photographing a senior who's just… at home in front of the camera.

Kaden made my job easy. He's relaxed, real, and totally himself. These are the sessions where the photos feel less like portraits and more like little pieces of who someone actually is right now.
