Long ago, the man in this photo taught my husband (then just a little kid) how to roll a whitewater kayak. You could say the rest is history. Not only is whitewater Dave’s life’s passion, but it’s also how we met, and now we have these two great girls. Decades later and I find myself photographing his daughter’s wedding!

What is funny is until the day of her wedding I have never met the bride! We had all these connections, I was friends with her sister 20 years ago in Seattle, her dad was as huge influence on Dave, she & her husband are theater kids and so was I…and more and more and more.

This wedding felt like being home. I loved it. Oh I absolutely loved every minute of it!!! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful… It made me feel a lot of hope.

Flash is not the easiest thing and focusing in a dark dark room is also tenuous, so I was hoping to the photo gods that everything worked out the moment I saw Mr. Grant kiss his daughter‘s hands after their dance to a Paul Simon song. It was a lovely and moving moment, gracious and tender, and if there was ever a time for me to know how to work my camera, it was then.

On a personal note, thank you to everybody at this wedding who has had a wonderful influence on me & my life.

My kid turned 7 a few days after a hurricane blew away our town. With no electricity, no water, no cell service… We did what we could the neighbors came over in the backyard. Someone had some very old little cupcakes. Some of us still had canned bubbly water. We had a fire. She turned seven. I wanted to delay the party, but in her little brain, she did not understand. She thought if she didn’t have a party she would have to be six for a whole year more. She had nosebleeds every day for three weeks. My other child, wet the bed every night for weeks. Looking back it was a strange time. It wasn’t all bad and it wasn’t all good. We went without water for over 70 days. I have never loved my neighbors or my home more.
