Bright doesn't have to mean flat.

A white room still needs shadow.

Without it, stairs lose their form.
Walls lose their separation.
Materials lose their texture.

Good light doesn't erase shadow.

It gives it somewhere to belong.

Sometimes the photograph you're looking for happens after you stop looking for it.

This was one of those mornings.

I'd gone up to Waterrock K**b for sunrise — a place I know well. Before COVID, I used to teach sunset photography workshops from this very overlook.

That morning, I'd already made the photographs I'd gone there to make. The sun was up. The tripod could have gone back in the car. Morning accomplished.

But I kept walking.

Waterrock K**b has this wonderful plateau with views in nearly every direction, and I wandered around to see what else the morning might be doing.

And then I saw this.

Nothing dramatic was happening. No blazing sky. No spectacular burst of color. Just the early light moving through the haze, layers of mountains disappearing into the distance, and these trees quietly holding the edge of the frame.

Years ago, I probably would have been more interested in the sunrise.

These days, I'm increasingly interested in what happens when I turn around.

Maybe that's one of the things photography has taught me over the years: the more you learn to look, the less you need the world to perform for you.

Sometimes you just have to keep walking.

The land is the first room.

Before a wall is drawn or a room is furnished, a place already has character.

Light moves through it a certain way. Fog settles where it wants. The landscape decides what will be revealed—and what will remain hidden.

The strongest architecture doesn’t ignore that atmosphere.

It listens to it.

Photography should do the same.

This is why I photograph the natural world—not as something separate from architecture and design, but as a practice in seeing what a place is already saying.

Wide-angle photography can do some remarkable things.
The kitchen island stretches into another zip code.
The fireplace quietly packs its bags and moves halfway to Tennessee.
It’s dramatic. It’s impressive.
It just isn’t true.
Sometimes the best way to photograph a space honestly is to stop trying to cram everything into one frame.
Tell the truth in two photographs instead of telling a lie in one.

"Tender Moments"
Captured in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, a few years back. I watched a large group move across the field, in the early morning hours, I waited for the bull to get close to this cow and then captured this! It really was a tender moment... :-) So special to me in fact I painted it in pastel!
