Sunrise at Doughton Park

I got up at 4:00am and drove from where we were camping Whitetop Mountain VA to Laurel Springs NC for sunrise. When I arrived, it was mostly overcast, but there was a brief moment when the sun peeked through and lit up the flowers in the early morning light.

Coneflowers at Backbone Rock
Located just outside of Damascus, VA, this is a cool historical landmark. There are several hiking trails, including one that takes you to the top of the rock structure. Its also a "world shortest tunnel" at a whopping 15 feet long.

Fontana Dam

I haven’t been to many places (yet) that you can not only drive over a dam, but actually travel across it on foot. The Fontana Dam is one of those underrated gems. Even more cool is that you are on the Appalachian Trail while doing it. And it is only time this ever happens on the AT.

I’ve never been one for making plans … I usually don’t stick with them. I can plan an entire road trip and then just veer off course because I see something cool on a map. This was one of those times.

I love history, so this should have been in the plans, but it wasn’t. It is definitely on my list to return to so I can do the guided ranger tours, check out the hikes and just enjoy the landscape.

Where is the best place to visit in Virginia? My favorite for years has been Grayson Highlands State Park. The beautiful views, miles and miles of trails, and best of all … the ponies.

There are some places worth visiting over and over. Grayson Highlands State Park is easily one of them. Between the beautiful views, traversing the Appalachian Trail, and going all gooey over the ponies, it’s hard not to fall in love with it every single time. ❤️
