Today in Maine, my Uncle Will's memory and spirit are remembered in a Celebration of Life event, as he passed away this Spring. Though I'm in California, I hope that his community throws a hell of a party over there.
He was a standout in my family community for his positivity, humor, honor to the wilderness, and life filled with music - both creating and championing. These traits shine through on his last album "Just One More Thing... Before I Go," with the songs titled "Dirt Nappin' " and "Diners in Heaven." He played guitar and sang much of his life, being part of a band in high school and bucking the conservative rules on appearance... getting suspended because he wouldn't cut his hair. A story still spinning. His unrestrained laughter - such a gift.
Uncle Will understood about the width of human experience and how far kindness and support go. I think a lot of this came from his mom, my Grammy, who was known for flowers in her hair and gentle positive energy and gift-remarks, to the point that poems were written about her in Maine. Uncle Will always brought the light, with a wry smirk and upbeat nature to every interaction throughout my life. Never saw a cruelty or joke pressing on the back of others, which was a rarity in my surroundings, and was so very important to see and feel.
He fought on behalf of nature and animals for many years, as Director of state park system in Maine. In this vein, Katherine and I will be tipping our hats during upcoming camp and travel trips in that beautiful state.
For now, that feels like it fits. Uncle Will - thank you so much for your voice and actions while you were here on Earth and in all their echoes and ricochets in life and love and music and beauty. The world glows more because you were here ~
