Wonderful to see my close friend Mary Calvert along with Dino Vournas this past Sunday, after lunch. The 3 of us worked together at the Hayward Daily Review for about 2 years, 1988-89, when we were part of this close knit and awesome photo staff. That’s a while ago and our lives have changed so much for the better since then, but those were great times that in many ways have never been replaced. The bantering and camaraderie we had when several of us were around the light table editing the film from our assignments, to shooting the Niners and the competitive zeal we had in not only beating the Mercury News, the SF Chronicle, and the SF Examiner, but competing with each other to get the “best photos” were precious. Freelancing for the past 36 years has been quite the adventure, but I haven’t yet found the sense of community and support the all of us felt back then.

‘Wife supporting her husband before his appointment at a health care clinic.’
Oakland, CA 2025

As I was waiting at a health clinic last week, I saw this touching scene between this couple right in front of me, and considered what to do. I decided to take 3 very quick photos and hope I that I captured the essence of this moment of love and caregiving.

John Gray’s Memorial Celebration - I didn’t take very many photos at John’s Memorial last Saturday, as I wanted to be completely focused and present when his family and former students were speaking. When I am taking photos, I’m focused on capturing moments that tell a story with several things happening at the same time to give the photo some layers. But when John’s wife Sue spoke, I decided to take some and show how she, her daughter Kyra and granddaughter Samantha, were honoring him with their love and grace, and how they were supporting each other.

Sunday morning, I’ve had my coffee at a neighborhood coffee shop here in Echo Park where Micah and I are staying at Bryce, Meg’s, and Nick’s apartment. I was thinking while having my Mocha, how essential it is for me to have new experiences and new stimulations, to always always be doing my best to have that in my life, in my family’s life..

I’m thinking about John Gray’s Memorial Celebration yesterday, of how everyone spoke so movingly about how he helped to develop and build a welcoming community of creative artists, over the years when he was a Photography professor at Moorpark College.

How he nurtured us, advised and challenged us, was always willing and available to talk with me, with all of his students, about my creative roadblocks and he would always respond in a positive way with possible paths and actions to take.

Like many of us, I became part of a family of his former students, who learned to find empathy in our world of much suffering, to through our photography document with our hearts, the compassion that we see by people for others and to shine the light on it.

He showed us that fighting for social justice and to honor the people who do so with our photo essays is profound and powerful, that these works are meaningful and that they leave a lasting impact on the people who view them.

I am part of an extraordinary tribe of creative people, a group who helped me and everyone in the community John Gray helped build, become who we are now and I am filled with a deep and everlasting sense of gratitude.

Portrait of 'Van Gogh's Daughters'

We took portraits of emerging artists for the annual Goldies issue of the San Francisco Bay Guardian for 18 years, until the SFBG closed down in 2014. During these years we had some of the most creative experiences with artists when we did their portraits with our Hassleblad, shooting with b&w film, 12 frames in a roll so every portrait counted.

We love decorating and finding unique art for our home and some mornings in our bedroom we wake up to light that is stunningly beautiful. I think of this as I can’t imagine the pain and incomprehensible loss that thousands of people in Los Angeles are experiencing as they’ve lost the morning light in their homes.

With all the running Hera Baby and Flash do when we let them out, I like it when they pause to reflect like they did this morning at Sandy’s mom’s home in Hayward, CA.. Flash is experiencing extreme separation anxiety and she needs to not feel like she needs to protect us as much as she does. So some serious training is coming her way early next year. When we’ve left the house, but actually, are up in the office, these two howl up a storm like nobody’s business, something your local choir would take notice to.

Very early on Christmas Morning, I took our dogs Hera Baby and Flash out at in the backyard where they ran with such energy it was a beautiful thing to watch, until for a brief moment Flash paused to take it all in.
