Half Dome & Sentinel Meadow - Yosemite National Park

The media hype train is publishing stories non-stop about Memorial Day traffic in Yosemite. Shocking! I shot this photo on a Tuesday in April and it wasn’t busy at all. In the travel industry it’s referred to as “shoulder season”.

Upper Yosemite Falls last month from Cook's Meadow. It had been years since I had photographed Yosemite in the middle of spring so it was fun to take my kids to the big waterfalls during Spring Break. It wasn't that busy either until later in the week when we were leaving, which was a pleasant surprise.

Lake Tahoe Panoramic a few weeks ago, two days after a spring snowstorm. My daughter had never seen snow in-person before so we went during the kid's spring break before spending the rest of the week in Yosemite.

In the late afternoon at Badwater Basin, I noticed that a narrow beam of light was illuminating the distant horizon so I built my composition around that. While the mountains and reflection is probably the first thing you'll notice here, it's the little details like the beam of light on the ground that compel me to make these images.

Almond Blossoms, Stanislaus County - The Sierra has been getting lots of snow. Meanwhile the valley has lots of "Valley Snow".

I'm looking forward to getting in some travel this year. Aside from flying into Las Vegas for the Death Valley photo shoot last month, I haven't traveled out of California in two years. We'll be starting off in Cape Cod then drive up the New England coast to Acadia National Park. Then go to Quebec City and Montreal, before going to Cooperstown to visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame museum before returning to Boston.

In the meantime, here's a photo from South Carolina that I made two years ago at the Cypress Gardens, perhaps best known for the canoeing scene from "The Notebook".

Lake Manly Panoramic - Death Valley National Park

What struck me most about this scene was how silent it was at Badwater Basin before sunrise. I was here probably 30 minutes before the next person showed up. By the time I finished up, there were a few people around but way more relaxed than a few days prior during sunset.

Devil's Golf Course - Death Valley National Park

Devil's Golf Course is one of the most unusual landscapes that I've ever seen. As soon as you step out of the car, you're surrounded by mounds of salt crystals as if someone went through and made sandcastles out of salt.

Anticrepuscular Rays Over Lake Manly at Dawn, Death Valley National Park, California

The combination of wide-open landscapes & high desert light makes Death Valley a landscape photographer's paradise. I'll admit that I was not compelled to visit until working on my upcoming book but now I realize what makes this a special place.

Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes was a beautiful place but the amount of people there got me a bit flustered. If I had a few more days I definitely would have spent more time here exploring and photographed in the early morning hours rather than later in the day.

When most people cleared out I photographed a lone photographer atop the highest dunes for scale. When there are multiple people in a landscape, I compare it to cars, power lines & graffiti in a photo but with a lone figure, it adds some dimension to an otherwise barren landscape.
